First Thing.

I HAVE NOT YET RIDDEN THE BIKE AND ONLY BRIEFLY SAT ON THE SEAT.

I got home and found my seat on the doorstep. Unboxed it, put it on the bike. sat on it briefly.

Then I looked at the invoice. There was no charge for the heavyweight spring I asked for. I called Russell. They confirmed they did not put it in. I spoke with the seat maker (Dan) he made the decision based on my pics that I did not need it. Giving the benefit here to the seatmaker who has way more experience than I at these things.

BUT

Before I sent in the seat I PMed several forum members and got their opinion on the spring vs no spring and based on a few discussions with them and the Russell site that says:

But for drivers weighing 225# or more, and passengers weighing 150# or more, the HeavyWeight Suspension is required for adequate support. $45.00 per saddle.
I requested to have it put in. Since I am 230lbs in my Bday suit, add roughly 12 lbs of gear/clothing that puts me at a riding weight of approx 240lbs. I also figured that my SVELT body would only get more svelty with time, it would not hurt to have the support over time.

This is just one of those things that in hindsight I don't go, "I really do wish they had put that extra support in there"

just a little miffed at the moment

Fencer, put it on the bike and go ride 500 miles or so. That's about what it takes to "break in". From that point, make you decision. If you still "feel" you need the spring, you can call Russell and begin the mitigation process (since you asked for the spring). You MIGHT find they are right and you won't need it. I have it on mine, but my "lowest" weight (nekkid) is 230# + and it climbs closer to 290....and I'll tell you that the spring is very stiff.

Only saddle time will tell! Until then, waaaayyyy too much angst and emotional energy wasted...save it for Saturday and go for a ride. :)

 
First off, let me say I'm sorry they didn't install the heavy duty spring you asked for. They should have at least called you to discuss & clear it with you.

That said, I'm 225-235 (depending on season) and when I got the seat I didn't go for the heavy duty spring. After 18k miles with the seat all seems well & it still is an all day comfy seat. YMMV, no connection to any vendor, etc etc.

 
You mean you asked for it. They decided not to put it in, and you found out after you received the product?

You may love the seat as is, I hope you do, but I'd be miffed too to the point that I'd probably send it back and go take up TWN's offer of a steak dinner the night before your ride in to Bill Mayer ;)

 
Ya know dude.....they put springs on them ol' harleys back in the day....but, of course, you probably already know that being as ol.....er.................never mind.

 
They have a satisfaction guarantee. Give it break in time and see if they were right. If not, you could probably get them to do the spring gratis. I suspect you'll find they were right and saved you some cash.

 
The beauty of the seat comes at the end of a 500 + mile day. Just sitting on my Russell, it doesn't feel like anything special. The pay off is after 10 hrs in the saddle and you think to yourself; "Jeez, my *** feels terrific". Good luck, I hope you end up being as happy with yours as I am with mine.

 
Screw that. There was nothing wrong with the first seat you had. What the responders here have not seen is your ***. And there's the problem. Having seen your ***, I can attest; You need a new ***.

When I got my seat they told me to ride it 1000 miles to break it in. They also said that they would buy the seat back within the first year as long as they had a chance to fix any thing I was unhappy about.

If I were you I would put at least a 1000 miles on the seat before I did anything. You may find they saved you some money.

I'm not worried about the comfort factor, I'm sure that will be fine. I am concerned about the longevity of the seat and the foam breakdown over time/miles.
