Just moved to Greensboro NC

If you like paper maps...get a Gazetteer for the states in your region. You can pull that out and plan day rides, weekend rides, etc.

You can also check out or google motorcycleroads.com or something like that. kind of a storing house of information based on someone else's reviews. MS S&T is a great software rfor trip planning...gives you a sense of how long a ride is going to take.

Obviously, people on this board will give you some great first suggestions...but checking them out yourself in a gazetteer map, then actually riding it, gives it's own special satisfaction.

Head west and ride any good 2 lane paved road in the mountains and you'll be fine. There's also this road called the Blue Ridge Parkway that's not too shabby. You not too far from that. I'd consider that "localish" if I lived in Greensboro. Your only 90 minutes from there dude!

Runs from Liberty to Asheboro. 18 miles end to end - pretty twisty

Or you can hit it from I40 (Route 49) and ride clear to Charlotte

Old Liberty Road is an excellent suspension test track. Be prepared for it, including the off-camber, decreasing radius, pothole turns. And when they say one-lane bridge... they MEAN one lane!

Uwharrie forest is a good area in the colder months.

Southern VA is well within reach for a day ride. Only problem is that in the past year, VA has decided to chipseal every decent motorcycle road in the state. They leave the gravel instead of brooming it away. One more reason not to live in VA or ever pay taxes there.

Welcome to the area. I'm just 20 miles west of you in the upper Lexington area. There are some great roads/routes not too far away. We ride 300-450 miles almost every Sunday. I discovered most of my routes via the https://americaridesmaps.com/ map series. There are roads that I would never have investigated without having these maps and recommended routes. As for VA, like the previous posts indicate some of the roads are pretty bad with loose gravel. Hwy 40 out of Woolwine, VA toward Ferrum, VA is still one of the better roads to light up the tires. There are numerous good routes that are within a 50 mile radius of Boone, NC. Getting to Boone is just a 80 mile ride up 421.

Thanks for the input everyone. I can tell you riding down here is much more relaxed and enjoyable as opposed to DC, and I was in downtown DC. While I will never drop my guard while riding, it's nice to feel like everyone isn't actively trying to kill me while I'm on the bike. The only disadvantage is I had 31 years of living in the DC area and knew where to go so well. I look forward to getting to know my new area on my FJR.

ToyQuest, thanks for the offer and I will definitely drop you a line in the coming weeks as we get a bit more unpacked and I can spend a day on the road.

NC-66, NC-89 and NC-268 from north of Walnut Cove up through the area around Hanging Rock State Park are fun roads. Link those up with some of the curvier connectors in the area like Phillips Rd, Sheppard Mill Rd, Jewel Rd and you can make yourself a nice little circuit.
