Had an on going problem with surging, the TPS was blamed but after pulling up error screen several times, it all ways came up fault 16 (I think) maybe 17, the kick stand switch. The only time it will act up is when I have ridden a long ways or it hot out side.

It’s going in the shop the first week of December they are also going to replace my dash that melted.

It not looking good for many more miles this year, it was 7 deg this morning.

Kick stand switch could cause it, if you define surging as an on-off problem. Usually, it's not that severe.

Kick stand switch will prevent starting, but I don't see any way it could affect rideability, or cause surging.
+1

You have other issues. Do you have a service manual? For each error code, there are frequently several possibilities for the cause of that code.

Believe me, I know. I just spent all of last night and several hours this morning trying to diagnose and fix a yellow engine warning light with associated error code 24 (O2 sensor).

So far so good, everything back to normal, but I'll be damned if I know what I did to fix it.

I changed my post, Skoot, after remembering that lowering the stand will kill the motor if in gear, so it could cause a perception of surging.

Hmmm. I recall an earlier post with the same error code and someone suggested that the ignition switch may need to be cleaned. Aparently there is a set of contacts at the bottom of the switch that is related to the kick stand cutoff. The suggested fix was to remove the top tree, flip it over, and spray contact cleaner in the bottom of the switch.

My guess is that you have two sepatare problems here. One for the error code and one for the surging.

At another time, in another place Ratman said:

For some reason my 04 has started to try to buck me off at road speed, I can be going down the road at highway speed running around 3000 RPM the motor will drop out and then startup with a vengeances. It’s in that floating stage were you would have no power applied but still not backing off. It’s worse when hot and low on fuel.
If this description remains true then this isn't the normal factory installed surge. If your side stand switch is in fact intermittently indicating the stand is down the engine would stop. Dunno why it would happen only at a particular RPM range. Parts tight? Connections clean?

Geezer could be correct about the ignition switch. With the engine is running try wiggling the key to see if the engine shuts off or misfires.

Maks sense to me I'll give it a try.

I dont agree with the tech but I will let him do his thing when the weather turns bad. the first part of Dec.

They always say its colder then hell outside, I don't get it. The lakes are frozen the ducks are gone and I can't ride my scooter with out layers and layers of clothing?? Where is the deductive reasoning for living in such a place?

It could be when that 130 HP skid mobile comes out of the shed and lights up the lakes. It too much fun and when you leave the bar and fall off, you don’t fall very far you just slide on the snow.

Surging again - one of my (not so) favorite topics - since I have the problem also.

One interesting thing here - does anyone notice if the surging is worse when you have a passenger? My FJR is MUCH WORSE whenever I have a passenger.

Is it possible that the extra weight ( I am guessing 130-140 lbs max, and NO I am not going to ask because I do not want my nads removed) is possibly doing something in combination with the side stand contacts, like by the frame being lower due to the weight, frame flexing a little more?

I don't know, grasping at straws here - but I am wondering if there is a combination of things going on with side stand, heat and maybe extra weight that could be causing the side stand contact to happen more often? Now that I typed it it sounds pretty un-realistic. But you never know. I HATE the problems that are intermittent and almost impossible to clearly identify. So much easier when something is just plain old broken, and you know what to fix!
