Today at lunch I found myself on the perimeter of campus with a camera in my hands, so I snapped pics of some of the sweet bikes I spotted parked on the perimeter of campus (Berkeley provides lots of free M.C. parking around its perimeter :clapping: ).

Which one(s) would you chose? There's something for everyone: Aprilia, Triumph, Suzuki, BMW, KTM.... I like that BMW K1600GT myself. But scroll to the end to see my absolute favorite that I would ride home over everyone of them given the choice.

A couple years back we stopped in Chico for lunch at Madison Beer Gardens right next door to Chico State, parked int he Chico State motorcycle parking at the end of the street. Parked in the motorcycle parking were; us, a Triumph, and a yellow Duc! I thought, "How can this student afford this Duc?" They need.... :dribble:

I can just hear the conversation:

Student: Oh mummy...?

Mother: Yes Dear

S: Besides you paying for the outrageous tuition and room and board, I'll need some transportation between classes. Some of my classes are across campus, almost a quarter mile away, I'll never make it to class on time without a vehicle of some sort!

M: What do you need dear?

S: I know of a real green machine that is easy on the environment, a Ducati 1198R, The "R" is for renewable energy!

M: Ok, go ahead and put it on mummies credit card, I’ll tell your father it’s OK.

S: K! Thanks mummy! I love you!

That's why I chose the Aprilia, must be an errror, it's gotta be a transfer studuent.

My how things have changed! When I was in school, no one could afford such equipment. The best you could hope for was a 25 year old POS that had duct tape all over the seat and wires hanging out of the dash you had to twist together to start it. I wonder how those poor starving college students are making those payments; not to mention the outrageous insurance for young males on sportbikes..... That KTM was really sweet. I dont know why they would need and adventure bike in that area though. Perhaps to navigate hazardous alleyways in search of recyclables and head shops??

Yep -- that 1100 was a damn nice bike. I owned one of its predecessors (see example below) -- bought it ('78 GS1000 EC) new in the crate in 1979. It was the bike I first (and often) rode from Tahoe City (via Hwy 49 from Sierraville) to Nevada City and back.

When I went to law school at age 29 in 1981, I often rode it to and from school. Great bike and I wish I still had it, but I traded it some years later for tractor work on 2 acres my ex and I lived on in Newcastle. Good to see some of the students at UC Berkeley still have good taste in older motorcycles.

Me - "Hey mom, can I have a piece of bread from the new loaf?"

Me Mum - No sweetie, that's the day old bread I brought home yesterday, let's use up the 3 day old bread in the partial loaf first. There's a couple of ears of corn that your dad grew from the garden in the fridge, eat one of those if you-re hungry?"

Me - I can't eat another ear of that tough corn, the last one I ate was ready for seeding. So, what's with that sweet red stuff that was in the Ball jar?

Me Mum - Oh No, you didin't drink it did you? That was the glucose corn syrup I made for the hummingbird feeder!

Me - Yikes, I think I'm going for a ride on my motorbike.

Note: Parent's both lived through the Great Depression and were scrupulously frugal, but they had no qualms about me owning or riding a motorbike around the countryside as long as I stayed off the road. It was too dangerous out there on the pavement? They never brought up the insurance thing?

Also - Riding a motorcycle to school guaranteed one a parking space almost any time of day.
