https://www.klr650.net/forums/index.php Hi Scott, Are you a member of the KLR 650 Forum? You may want to consider joining, this website was great in helping me set up my 2006 KLR for a trip to Batopilas, Copper Canyon, MEX in November of 2005. Russ and Jeff are right, Cogent rear shock is the best
money can buy for the KLR.
https://motocd.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=45 Thank God, the "Moab" was not available back in 2005, I would've had another heart attack spending $600 on a rear shock on a KLR that only cost $4K out the door!

The KLR 650 is one of the best all around adventure dual-sport bikes and is the true go anywhere do anything bike! The KLR comes equipped with a very basic and soft suspension that does not live up to the motorcycles capabilities. The factory rear shock is of the emulsion type design where pressurized nitrogen is contained as a bubble within the damping fluid. Once the bike is ridden, this bubble brakes up and emulsifies as a sort of foam within the damping fluid. While inexpensive to manufacture, this type of shock gives poor damping characteristics. The stock KLR shock also uses materials and components that compromise its performance. The cast aluminum body causes a high degree of internal friction in the shock that not only causes the bike to not absorb small bumps but also will make the damping fluid to turn "muddy" with aluminum particles further degrading the performance and negatively impacting longevity. The Cogent Moab shock addresses all these shortcomings and more!"
