I too have an 02 that I bought new. It will turn 30,000 miles in the next few days. I am getting ready now to go to CO , WY, & MT for a little exploring and camping on it next Saturday for 10 or so days. It gets used almost daily as a commuter around Kansas City and the 60 mles down to my farm which is on a gravel road while the FJR is used for dedicated trips.

With the KLR observing traffic is much better, at slow speeds it is much more maneuverable with its wide handle bars and 200 pounds less weight to manage, and you have $5,000 hanging out there for the unwashed masses to mess with vs a $13,000 FJR. If you knock it over, you pick it up and go again vs writing a check for several thousand dollars.

I have the Corbin flat seat and I did a 700 mile day and it was easy. A 1,000 IBA run would be no problem if that was your choice. If you run them much over 75 mph or so keep an eye on your oil level. They do seem to go through it at higher speeds. Also, although the tank holds 6.1 gals you can only use about 5.5 gals before you run out of gas.

Smitty141 bough one a few months ago so the way its going, we may have to change this to the FJR/KLR forum. Just kidding, plenty of KLR places to go. And, your not going to believe this but they have the ongoing tires/oil discussions to make you feel at home.

Hey Smitty, What brand of side cans are those? I have the same bike and love it. Just got a Kenda rear tire to replace the factory rubber.

Mike ..congrat's on the new bike ....and very nicely farkled to boot!

Like everyone, I had a KLR at one point and put a ton of miles and fun on it.

You'll have some good fun on that, sure opens up a lot of options. If you're ever up in nevada-land with the baby ...be sure to let me know. ....renojohn

Looks like a Happy Trails setup to me ?

I belive those are the Afrika cases which are a light weight version of the Happy Trails. My son has had two of them develop stress cracks from the vibes on the KLR. If memory serves you can get that setup through WhiteHorse for around 250.00.

I have one more set of the ones like on madmikes minus the angle cut. They are in kit form meaning that all the bending is done and they just need to be welded up and mounted on mounts of your choice. they are .091 thickness 6061T marine alloy. If anybody wants them for 120.00 incl freight let me know. They cost me 150.00 a set when I was building them and I was selling them for 300.00 welded up with latches.

Mikey...

Is that puddle of water behind the bike and near the KLR suggeting you WASHED your freaking dual sport bike? Can you say.... puuulllleeeeaaazzzeee?

Hey...maybe we could plan a Dual Sport ride based in Sonora, CA. I know this guy (who will remain unnamed) who has been telling me about the roads up there. Lots of dirt roads, side roads, paved goat trails, twisty back roads, etc., etc., etc. He's mentioned a couple of times that he'd like to get a dual sport...mebbe if we planned a get-together in his neighborhood it would motivate him?
Yer fren, tew :spiteful:

Lessee, that could be TurboDave, TWN, Highlander, MM2, CAJW, Uberkul, Orangevalefjr, ? . ? .

...........and a certain farkle-maker could get measurements for add-ons :pardon:
Okay. I'll ride my DRZ
As will I, count me in on some of that dirt action also! Just let me know how much dirt Mike so I'll make sure to have the appropriate set of wheels and tires on it. That puddle of water? is probably from Mike wetting hisself after riding it in the twisties!

I gotta jump in and bail Mike out. The picture is taken in my driveway in Oregon and I had just finished washing the car that you can see in the garage. It is considered bad form to wash a dual sport more than once a season. :yahoo:

Congrats Mike! After selling my Triumph I was looking at Dual Sports. I decided to farkle up the FJR instead. Now I learn you all have been getting Dual sports! No wonder I haven't seen you around lately! :clapping:
