IMO KTM builds the best off road bikes you can buy. Ready to go right off the showroom. I've got an '02 400 EXC and love it.

A friend of mine has been checking prices on the Adventure. Look around, I hear you might be able to get a deal on one.

The owner of the one that parks near me said not to buy a used early one, as they had problems with the rear cylinder overheating. No personal knowledge, just what he told me...

I have a 950 ADV, which is the carbureted version of the 990. I've put just under 12000 miles on it so far and the only problem I've had is a no-start condition after a tip-over or on hot days. The tanks are vented into a carbon cannister, and if the bike tips over it can cause the canister to fill with fuel...simple solution is to remove the cannister, which is a common mod to these bikes.

The only mods I've done are a new seat (Renazco), crash bars, gps, and one of those handlebar mounted switches to toggle the display.

The 950/990 is a very good street bike, but not as plush as say a GS...it's just more off road oriented than the GS...more suspension travel, lighter, better handling.

FWIW.

I have a friend that rides many 1000's of miles more a year than I do that has one in his stable of bikes. He has had it for about 2 years now and flogs the **** out of it. He said it does really go stable high speed full lock slides. (He was at Christmas Valley in central Oregon doing 120 mph on a dry lake bed) He also rides it as a canyon carver when he doesn't ride his Honda 900 RR.

I guess the only complaint he has is it goes through tires...think it has more to do with his right hand than anything else :lol: :lol:

No 990, but a 950S, 2005.5 vintage. Great bike and a superd compliment to the FJR. Here's mine;

Now, go out and get you one!

They are a lot of fun. A freind had one, and I almost bought it from him. The things are serious man bikes, and are definately built for taller people. Maintenance is a bitch, however.
