Sahuarita, AZ. Gave up on rainy Oregon
While getting gas in my scooter yesterday, a 20 something female person, pulls in toward me at the pump and gives the attendant instructions for her fill up. (Remember, in Oregon, there is NO self serve). So, just as I am getting ready to put my helmet on and swing a leg over, the lady facing me decides to

a) change her mind about the gas,

B) forgot where she was,

c) was on her cell phone,

d) her stupid kicked in abruptly,

or whatever, and put the car in gear and started to pull out. I, pretty stunned by the demonstration of stupid, managed to wave at her and point to the hose, which was now stretched to its limit and ready to break. It did not seem to want to pull out. She hit the brakes and slapped her mouth at the same time and backed up a few feet, so the very agitated pump jockey could remove the hose and run inside for help or something. Not wanting to be around for any potential conflagration, I decided to mount up and leave. The last views of her face were of beet red confusion and more reaching for her cell phone.

Be careful, she and others like her, (not gender specific) are all over the ******* place!

Hm.....I suspect a bit of "temporary ghoulish voyeurism" going on here......was she cute?

Come on....one has to think that skier knew this was gonna happen. "hot chick in a car getting gas and on the cell phone.......=........this fuel line is going for a ride". Plus, it is oregon......can't begin to tell ya how many kommie blonde bimbos there are in oregon.

Pretty perceptive, odot!. One always checks out the view and if decent or better, maybe they will find a reason to swing their legs out, etc and the view might get better (or in the case of certain celebrities, not). Anyway, this was a 5, maybe 6 and plenty stupid!

On the other hand, I have seen the same thing happen where the attendant (again, this is in Oregon where you can't pump your own gas) walked up to the driver's side, handed the woman her credit card and receipt and said, "Thank you ma'am, have a nice day." She pulled away and he hadn't removed the pump from her car. The hose snapped at the pump and came flying back smashing in her back window.

Jersey is another state that doesn't allow you to pump your own gas. I think these are the only two states that have this law. Anybody know the reasoning behind it?

I suspect it has to do with spills. In NY if you spill gas while pumping you could be responsible for the cleanup. Not some guy laying down a patch of quicksorb cleanup, a full on environmental cleanup ($$$$$). In reality this doesn't happen, unless you leave the pump unattended. If you like to leave the gas cap in the handle of the pump and walk away, I would not do that in NY.

Anyways, probably full-serve is a different way of handling this.

Do you REALLY have to ask that question?

JERSEY SUCKS!!! Plain and simple. BTW, the reasoning is EPA related. That's all I remember when I asked the attendant why I couldn't pump my own one day.

I saw the same thing in Milford PA a few weeks back. Couple pulls up to the pump, male gets out and sticks hose in tank, then runs in to the store to pay. Female driver (who else?) proceeds to pull away from the pump, stretching the hose completely taught. The person next to her starts yelling to stop and what does she do? Starts yelling BACK at him, something like "mind your own business" or "non of your business"...something like that.

Male comes back outside and proceeds to pump fuel. Nothing said until they pull away, I'm sure.

Unlike bikerskier, I just HAD to stick around for the explosion! I made sure I was far enough away first.

I think Oregon's excuse for no self service gas is that it provides jobs! You are right, I should have grabbed some popcorn and found a place to watch from a distance. Nothing like a bit of stupid induced, self immolation to spice up the day. Sort of of a Darwin thing, I guess.

I've seen a "drive off" here in Vermont on a self serve pump. It was down right funny with the break away hose. I just wondered how anyone could be that STUPID! Then I remembered, no matter how much someone tries to idiot proof something, someone comes up with a better idiot!!

I've seen stickers on some pumps in Tenn and Alabama that say we'll have to pay for enviro cleanup if we spill. They claim it's an EPA regulation, too. Always wondered if the fella driving that 1973 pickup with a rag for a cap has to clean up as he dribbles down the road at 12 mph. But at least he put the hose back...
