Laminar lip

I have one on my stock '05 screen. It moves the air behind me slightly if I raise the screen an inch or two, but I'm not sure it helps much otherwise.

I love my Rifle windscreen but cant find anyone that has played with the lip on one.How well did the lip work on the stock screen?I still have that one too.Did it cut down on the turbulance?

No experience with a Lip on a Rifle, but I do have a Gen I ’04 like yours.

The Lip does need to be properly installed for it to work best. There is a correct spacing distance between the windshield and the Lip to create air flow for the inverted airfoil. Some people have had their Lip come off when at speed. I dunno how that can happen when all the Velcro dots are used. In fact, I have a hard time removing the Lip for summer riding.

On my stock windshield the Lip creates a strong upward air push beginning someplace between 30 & 40 mph. At highway speeds the Lip creates a quiet, still air pocket and enough vacuum to try to push me forward a bit. The air pocket extends back over my pillion's head. There is no buffeting and the windshield is stable.

On my larger ahamaY windshield the Lip delivers the same performance, but I can keep the windshield and Lip down below my line of sight. The Lip does cause my ahamaY windshield to flutter (move from buffeting) which is very distracting to me but the air flow around me is still clean.

It’s common for people to ask me what the little dots are on my windshield.

The Honda ST1100 had a piece of split clear plastic tubing that snaked around the windscreen from one side, over the top, and down to the other side. It was incredibly effective at reducing cockpit noise. I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself.

My ST1100 was used and the split tube was missing. One would never have noticed, but I was on a quest to turn it back to bone stock (except for the seat), and so I ferretted this difference out, ordered the parts from mrcycles, and installed it. It was very noticable. It provided a bump that gave the rider's pocket a little bit more cushion from turbulence... and it worked.... and it was cheap....

You gotta take my thoughts on windshields with a grain of salt though. I'm the kinda guy who drops the windshield to its lowest position and never raises it back again, except to clean bugs from its underside.

Ionbeam is on the money with his reply in my experience. The only difference for me is that I haven't noticed the buffeting of the stock screen on my bike. I can't find a position that eliminates the turbulence with the screen raised near full travel with the lip on or off the screen. That, of course, is one of the big complaints on this bike. I think if the screen wasn't adjustable, there wouldn't be a complaint.

With that said, it would be nice to find a perfect solution that would allow riding with the screen up in order to keep rain/cold air off the upper body without feeling like you are being beaten in the back of the head with a wet bath towel! Although the LL is an improvement over the stock screen, it is not the ultimate solution for me. It has worked well enough for me to prevent me from spending money on another screen, though.

Many folks seem to settle on a "summer" screen and a "winter" screen.

Forgot to add that mine has been on the bike since Spring 2005 and I have never feared that it would depart from the windscreen. The little dots that hold it on are VERY difficult to release to get the lip off the bike. I can also say that mine has been "flight tested" and I have no fear of the lip departing the bike at speed.

i am using the laminar lip with a stock shield on my 04. it is the best compromise for me in the summer. it has eliminated the paint shaker syndrome on my helmet and in the full up position, i can duck down an inch and it is totally quiet for phone calls on my Q2.

without the lip i wouldn't have been able to ride to sturgis straight for 13 hours without a severe headache and sore neck. i think it really helps to smooth things out but it isn't the perfect answer. it was in my opinion worth the money.

otherwise the cal-sci tall shield works for me the very best for noise and comfort but i hate looking through it and its way too hot to sit behind if its over 60 degrees. also, it makes your bike look like a scooter on steroids.

i am using pullbacks on my bars and i am 6' with a 32 inch inseam if that helps.

Saeng makes a 'micro swirl edging' like El Toro is describing.

I don't have buffeting with the stock windshield, only with the over size ahamaY windshield shown in the picture from my previous post.

Had one on my VFR. I found that the airflow was better but it would exaggerate turbulence in the air (like if I was behind a truck). Really made the bike move around a lot.

I really like the v-stream. I am 6'2" with a 32" inseam. I usually ride with it down unless I am trying to clear fog off my visor.
