Well, I'm coming from many years on Gold Wings and BMW's. My wife needs a comfy, secure feeling backrest. The backrest on the Wing offers a lot of side support and she likes that. I sold the Wing after buying a *fun* Aprilia, recently, and decided that the Wing wasn't much fun to ride, really. Now I'm on to the hunt for a replacement two-up tourer.

Being a FNG on this FJR thing, I need to see what you've come up with for trunk/backrest combinations. The FJR is high on the list, but if I can't get the backrest issue sorted, I will have to move on.

Please post your trunk/backrest pictures - especially with any backrests that you've modified for additional passenger room and more comfort than say, a stock Yamaha or Givi backrest.

Thanks!

I too sold my 2nd 1800 Goldwing (and VFR) for the FJR and love it. I use it for solo riding though lots do 2 up.

I just added a SW-Motech luggage rack and Givi V46 top box:

You can add a Givi V46 or E52

Check twistedthrottle.com

If I were to be doing alot of 2 up riding I'd go with memeber Gaurald luggage rack/backrest and add a Kuryakyn Grantour bag when needed. I think this will provide the most passenger comfort, is well built, looks good and goes on/off easy with the 3 bolts on your stock luggage rack.

I had a Givi V46 on my ST1300 and my wife didn't like it. I wouldn't buy the pad that comes with it, its up high and not comfortable. Rather use the pad in the back of her jacket (she's wearing one right?).

I do like the looks of the Givi and SW-Motech rack. I don't like the looks of the premier cycle rack when the box is off though if you leave the box on it may be comfortable as I think its further back than the SW-Motech rack.

Oh yeah, congrats on your new bike!

I'll likely add another wing in a few years when my kids are old enough to take multi day (Blue ridge parkway) rides with me, maybe a GS Adventure or 1200RT but I always shy away from high cost of BMW ownership.

The wing is heavy but nothing compares to it for mile munching in comfort!

Here is the Corbin setup. Pros and Cons have been discussed. Have not had time to really ride the FJR due to heat this time of year.

I have a E-52 Top Box yet to mount when mounting hardware arrives.

Bill Mayer Saddle, Corbin Backrest, Yamaha topcase. Corbin backrest gives lower back support, topcase provides upper back support. Bill Mayer Saddles are good.

If you're comfortable with soft luggage, check out Gary's (garauld) luggage rack and backrest. My pillion finds a 2" extension on the backrest to be the most comfortable. This is a pic of a soft t-bag tailpack with the backrest and luggage rack:

Going to use this set up in combination with Kuryakan's Tombstone bag (has an internal frame and pad that turns it into a backrest for the solo rider) on a two-week jaunt:

Here is the thread for installing the trunk.Clicky

My wife said she likes it, and it gives nice support.

Thanks everyone! This is terrific information. Now I just need to sort out where to go from here.

Now that looks interesting. Details on who makes it, please. Is there a backrest attached to the top box?
Its a Fastbag. I tried to find a link in the US for you but there are no distributers here any longer. Ebay maybe?

Fastbag

Yes. the rest will velcro on and off. My wife likes it. I did a perm installation with modifications. It is ment as a temp install, like a tailbag.
