Sure, just add the gear at the bottom, instead of the top. First is too tall for traffic around here.
Heyyyy, granny gear on the FJR, say that's not such a bad idea. Might even be able to fit up some chains and plow snow with it in the winter!

New owner reporting in... other bike is a six speed. I'd say NO, doesn't NEED another gear. Would sixth be nice? Sometimes. Would the issue affect my purchase decision... absolutely NOT.

I think there's a reason for no sixth gear: the space was used for the shaft drive. So, a better question is whether you'd give up the shaft drive for a sixth gear. The engineers had to make the engine fit the overall packaging and monster torque reqires a robust gearbox...and that means it'll take up more room.

Well,

I went for a little 404 mile ride yesterday morning - (it was Father's Day ! Got to do what I wanted !)

Saw indicated 130 while passing a row of RV's on Hwy 395 N -

Avg 44.2 mpg -

don't really think it's needed.

Consider the pot stirred  .

It's real easy to get into the 90-100 mph range on an '05 and it doesn't seem like it's turning too high. Maybe a slightly taller 5th woulda been good here but I like it anyway.

If you guys need a 6th gear then my gsxr needs a 7th gear.

Mine in 6th is doing a little over 5grand doing 70mph.

The fjr in 5th is even lower. Jeesh!!!

Of course mine is gear'd down a little and I do mean little. 1 down in front and 2 down in rear makes it only a little lower than stock...

I was doing 135ish in 4th gear down in MO a couple weeks ago. After that weekend of riding, I really was getting used to staying in the upper RPM range.

Over this past weekend I was out riding thinking that a 7 speed would be good, too. I was just putzing around. Whole different sitchiation.

Don't think another gear is required. Doesn't mean I don't keep reaching for it. Road those 6 speed Suzuki's for too many years, I guess.

Yep, and you know since I started wearing ear plugs the higher rpm's really don't bother my as much.

I keep an eye on the rpm guage to try to keep her in the sweet spot of 5 and up and just ride her.

In the lower gears if I am just putzing along I will shift up to keep the twitchyness down.

It is like I read on one forum where they were talking about sport bikes being too much for new riders.

This one guy came on and said that after 2 weeks his 750 was slow.

BS, stop shifting at 4grand, rev it out and quicker and it won't be slow.

Same goes for the FJR, if you rev out the gears more you won't feel the need for another gear.

I find if I really rev out the gears on either the fjr or gixxer I find I am doing 80 and forget I have 1 or 2 gears left... Ride it correctly, up in the RPM range and it will be fine.

Jeesh!!!

Yep, the difference was the spirited pace with plugs and a helmet, versus the other way to ride. I definitely like wearing plugs and a lid and blocking out the outside world to my ears. When the music is blaring directly into my brain, or if I have my VERY efficient foam plugs in, I don't care what RPM I'm running. And with fresh rubber and TBS, the bike is pretty smooth all around. And like you said, I sometimes forget whether I have 1 or 2 gears left to use.

But I'd take a taller 5th or an extra 6th if you gave it to me. :D ;)

Buy a Harley, they have pretty low RPM's at Highway speeds :D :p

Buy a Harley, they have pretty low RPM's at Highway speeds :D :p
BTDT. Got tired of scraping floorboards, no performance, and kept hitting the rev limiter all the time. And they still needed another gear too. And about twice the hp.

You guys just sounds like all the young pukes trying to add more horsepower to a sport bike PCIII, exhaust, etc etc when they are no where near using the power they got. Considering the FJR will do 155 in 5th gear at an extremely low 10G's or so. Jeesh. Try riding a 600 and see what your RPM's are. Maybe you guys need one of those 2000cc Vulcans. Wonder if the RPM's will be low enough for ya in one of them :D

Didn't like the Harley idea, How about jumping in a cage :p

This is in the Never-Ending Pointless Recurring Thread so I am not taking this subject serious and you shouldn't take mine serious either. All in fun but Jeesh!

I am starting to like that word Jeesh, there I said it again...

I like SHEESH better than Jeesh. :p

Yeah, some of us search for more power, so we trade our FJR's for GIXXERS. Sheesh! :p

Does the Gixxer have 6 gears?

Yep, 6 gears and geared completely different than the FJR. First gear will do over 90 to 100mph stock gearing. All the gears after that have small increase. With a 12.5 redline again running in 6th I am doing over 5g's at 70mph. Sheesh, jeesh, and oh Dam...

Since it is 300 cc's less and 1 gear more it makes sense.

So maybe you don't need another gear you need a bigger engine...

Oh, and while you have nothing to do. Go figure out how to help me sync my throttle bodies :p

I think the FJR should have a 7th gear. Not a 6th, just a 7th. Skip that damn 6th all together.

Yeah, that's the ticket. A 7th gear without the preceding 6th gear would make the FJR one sweet ride.

"But it goes to eleven."

Have Smitty come to your house and do it for you. It's the least he could do, considering the fantabulous deal you gave him.

You know, I wish I had a 6th gear and the bike weighed 100 pounds less. Anyone want to do a titanium frame group buy if I can set it up? Carbon fiber wheels? Tank? Bars? Cases?

Oh man, I'm losing it.... :dribble:

It really shouldn't be that hard but you really appreciate Warchild and some of the others on this forum for detail when you have to go some place else for help.

It is small stuff, like I couldn't get the vacuum hoses off of the throttle bodies but no one could tell me that they could and I should be able to or they did some fancy connections.

Also there are a few sensors and I think one has to be unplugged so it doesn't send any readings.

Any ho don't want to hijack this incredible thread. I have one started but not getting much bite...

Hey Matt, this one has 6 gears...and is more than 100 pounds less.

Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?

Marty DiBergi: I don't know.

Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?

Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.

Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?

Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
