I've a brand new 2010 FJR and I notice a light tapping sound from the motor when idling (probably there at other speeds also if it weren't being drowned out by the wind). Is this a normal sound or is it the disaster sound I've read about with some of the earlier models?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dale

Get a pair of earplugs to protect your hearing and ride your bike. With the plugs in you won't hear a thing from the motor.

Yeah, I used to do that with my 'traded-in' 2007 Yamaha V-1100 Twin. I can stand the sound (it's not loud) but I just don't want to overlook something which might come back and bite me in the *** after I've logged a few miles over the warranty period.

$389 will get you a 4 year extension to the factory warranty - after that, just change the fluids and grease the bits as required and have no worries.

Welcome to the ride.

There is valve noise since it's solid tappets. Bad noises, like loose cam chain, are obviously bad.

My 07 was making noise shortly after new. I think it started at around 1500 miles. It only made noise at idle, at first. It would come and go, at first.

After a few thousand miles it was all the time at idle, and as soon as you raise the RPM it went away. It turned out to be a faulty Timing chain tensioner, that was covered under warranty. If you look in the tread about TCT survey you will see my post.

As Bramfrank said the YES warranty is well worth it. At the very least I would get it to a dealer, and get it documented before the warranty runs out.

Crap in a hat!!! Your chain noise began at 1500 miles! :dribble:

I think you currently hold the low-mileage record for CCT failure.

And folks wonder why I don't trust the OEM CCT, either the old unit or the re-design!

Also, FWIW, yours is only one of a handful of 07s reporting the need for a CCT change. Nothing newer.....YET!!!

(prolly 'cause the porkier 2008-2010 models just can't generate enough power to overstress that dinky little clock spring)

I stand corrected.

I just checked my post of it when it happened, and I first heard it at 5000 miles.

Here's a link to the post. If you look at post #3, you will see the mileage.

Odds are high that it's just the normal engine noise. The FJR motor is a noisy beast. When the Cam Chain Tensioner, (CCT), goes bad you will hear noise at idle on the right side of the engine. It will slowly get worse, may get very loud, then go quiet, then return and began to get noisy again. The tensioner is a spiral design, not a stepped one. When it fails, it tends to float back and forth, rather than maintain tension and continue to move out as wear occurs. CCT noise always goes away as soon as you put load on the engine, which tightens the cam chain.
