Long Rides?

Y'all that already have FJR1300s, what do you consider a long ride? The reason I am asking is that I was reading on the seat thread and I got the impression that any ride over 300 miles was considered a lot :haha: !

While I can't wait to get my FRJ1300AE next May, I am hoping that it doesn't tire one out after ONLY 300 miles. I go for 800 mile relaxation day rides on my GL1800 and still get off feeling great (as long as it isn't the dog days of summer).

While on a 10 day leisure ride this summer I averaged about 500 miles per day and felt good. On those days where I did over 800 I was a little tired. More recently I did a BBG and that kicked my ass. Less than one week later I did a two day trip from KC to SoCal, stopping in Denver for the night after day one. That trip was around 700 the first day and around 975 the second day. I was tired, but not to the point that I was crawling off the bike in misery (like I was after my BBG).

I think (personally) it's pretty easy to knock out 600 to 700 for a single day ride, but once the days start piling up I prefer to stay under 600.

Stock seat, no risers, stock grips, stock windshield, 6ft2in tall, 215 pounds, 34 inch inseam.

The 2006 is very different from previous models, so we don't know yet.

The stock 03-05 seat is not the softest seat, so opinions vary and some have aftermarket seats.

If you're thinking that the new FJR is going to be as comfortable as the GL, my guess is that you will be mistaken. I've done 1000 mile days on my FJR and, after running the second tank out at about 450-500 miles, I'm wishing I had an aftermarket seat.

I agree. But the FJR will be more fun once you turn down that highway full of curves and twists.

I am not expecting it to be as comfortable as my GL1800/A, but I just wanted to make sure 300 miles wasn't considered far.

I live in East Texas and I am going to ride to West Texas tomorrow to meet a friend for some BBQ and then ride home. With a litte excursion through the Texas Hill Country, I will probably do about 800 miles and for me that isn't to atypical of a ride.

I am expecting the FJR1300 to handle better than the GL1800 because of its size. If you have NEVER ridden a GL1800, I believe most of you would be EXTREMELY surprised on how well it handles.

If you plan on doing 800 miles a day on a FJR, you better start eating nails for breakfast now. Otherwise stick with the Wing.

I guess I will find out! Worst case I will be buying an aftermarket seat!

BTW, I am keeping the Wing and getting the FJR1300AE as a different ride. I would NEVER get rid of the Wing because I do a lot of long distance business travel and I take it most of the time!

The GL1800 handles extremely well.

Where I realize it is a BIG bike is when you half to stop quickly while at slow speeds and you are off balance (luckily only happened once)!

A long ride would be anything over 1000 miles a day. A respectable ride would be anything over 600 to 700 miles a day.

300 is for lunch. <_<

or breakfast if you start out early enough.

I have never written over a 1000 miles in a day because I have never had the need to. But I have gone on several 900 to 950 day trip rides out to West Texas and back to home!

Seats are a personal thing. Some people love aftermarket seats and some are perfectly happy with the stocker. I noticed the same thing with bicycles; a saddle that was quite comfortable for one was torment for another.

Ask me a year ago and 300 was long. With the Airhawk it went up to 500. Now after a BBG trips shorter than 1500 seem almost normal. ....that's probably scary.

Now that my fuel cell order has been completed and going for the custom seat--it likely will be even more.

Just did 860 (a new personal record which will probably remain unbroken!) from Couer d'Alene to Sacramento in 15.5 hours. Stock seat (with sheepskin) and stock windshield on an 05. I am a wimp compared to the LD riders that use this platform. I think the FJR will take you as far as you can sit upright.

Average day ride to the Hill Country is between 550 and 600 miles. The longest ride has been just short of 800. :bleh: Have not had a need to go any further in a day. Getting ready for a 700+ to New Mexico.
