Looking at buying bike trailer, need advice

The wife has kind of talked me into looking at motorcycle trailers so that we may trailer to far away locations towing the bikes so she is able to come along and ride. She is not willing/able to ride long distances and really doesn't want to ride on the back long distance either so I am looking at trailers but not sure where to start. I will be towing with a 2002 Honda CRV with towing capacity of 1500lbs. I was thinking of an open trailer, like a kendon, but they seem a bit pricey so I am open to the wisdom of the forum to lead me in the proper direction. The bikes to be towed are a 06 fjr and an 09 fz6r. Thanks

Hi rockmurf, I was in the same boat with my 13 year old Son Seth; he is good for up to 350 miles in a day as a pillion, but one mile over that and he is one ticked off teenager! This trailer from https://www.lowes.com has worked absolutely great for us. On June 6, 2010 it was on sale here in Chandler, Arizona at my local Lowe's store for $538, plus AZ tax of $47.34: $585.34. It is made by https://www.carry-ontrailer.com and is the 5' x 8' 2000 lb. Trailer #100369; pulls easily behind my Jeep Liberty Diesel SUV; 1,650 lb. Payload Capacity.

ShowMeMo: I use a Canyon Dancer harness on the handlebars, SkooterG had one and it works great; you can get them from Cycle Gear Stores, at least here in Arizona.

I then use ratchet style tie-downs from Auto Zone at all four corners. I also use eight of the double-loop straps from Cycle Gear at all of the eight tie down hook eyelets.

Yes, my trailer has a ramp.

rockmurf, It was set up for the trips to CFR- Quebec CA, BMW Rally in Oregon and WFO as a single bike hauler. However, when ShinyPartsUp arrives here in November on his KLR; I will have it set up with two separate rails with wheel chocks, so both Shiny's KLR and my BMW F650GS Twin can be trailered to Mexico for Copper Canyon; stored over in El Paso. TX.

ShowMeMo and rockmurf, This photo give you a better look at the ramp, my auxiliary ramp, the wheels rail and the wheel chock. Tie down well at four points and you are good to go!

I have a similar setup. Got the trailer from Lowe's for $580, added a diamond steel plate to cover the original mesh, fortified the frame, and had 6 heavy duty D-rings welded to the plate. Does the fender and lower fairing clear the rear portion of the chock that flips up?

What holes do you put the pin in for the flip up portion of the chock?

Where do you attach the front straps?

With my Husqvarna and economy pull rig

Yes.

The 3rd.

The delrin frame sliders. I have drilled a hole in either slider big enough to accommodate the hook of the ancra ties. Works great. I think "four point" mounting is important on a heavy bike like the FJR, but I stay away from the fork and the clip ons. The chock does a really good job at keeping the bike in place.

The good thing is that if your car breaks down you can put it on the trailer and pull it with the bike!

i got a kendon,yes alittle pricey but it folds up, stands up,and rolls into corner of yard not taking up space.

Leskid, the photo of my Beautiful BMW Fraulein "Ingrid" was taken by ShinyPartsUp in front of the McNamara home in Roseburg, Oregon; Mike - SPU and his wife Katherine, and their two children, graciously allowed Seth and I to stay at their home as our "base camp" while we attended the BMW MOA Rally held in Redmond, OR and while we explored the Oregon Coastline on our BMW. We then also went to Eureka, California on our fat German girl "Ingrid", our 2005 silver BMW R1150RT.

From there we rode to Mont-Tremblant for CFR and then continued to ride in New England with Seth's Aunts and Uncles, who are Harley Folk. My Son Seth is a Special Needs Boy, Seth is Autistic. Due to his Autism, Seth just cannot do certain things psychologically and emotionally like a normal boy can do. If pressed too hard, very sadly my Son Seth will have a "melt down"! With Autism, he'll never outgrow this condition!
