why are they so pokey? I click on something and nothing happens for a couple seconds and THEN the pinwheel starts. What's with that??
Add more RAM. When I was waiting for my refurbed iMac 27" to arrive, I ordered more RAM (through RAMJet) and installed it before first powering up the iMac. As with Win7, the more RAM the better. I wouldn't run less than 8Gb on either OS X or Win7.

I just received some spam from Dell yesterday and thought of this thread, so of course I have to share my spam with you all. :p

The Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook looks to be aimed at the same market as the Mac Airbook. Seems like a nice package, and pretty rugged.

But I still wouldn't like the idea of carrying around an >$1k laptop on the bike.

I'd boot to a distro of Linux off a flash drive or live CD on your old laptop before deciding that it's trash, or better yet, just give it to me.

I'm running xubuntu off a 4gb flash drive on an old Compaq laptop whilst making this post.

Wow, two sentences and I feel like a complete, computer-illiterate, moron. I didn't understand a thing you just said.

Oh thanks, now my head hurts. :dribble:

Actually, that's pretty cool. I didn't know you could do such things.

Linux does have some things in its favour but for my application Linux is not where its at. I don't want to be mussing around with the OS, I want to be editing photos and videos. I know the pro & cons of the PC's since I've lived with them now for a number of decades and I'm going to try the other side and have ordered a 13" MacBook Pro with an i7 processor, 8GB Ram and a 256GB SSD drive. I'll use my USB 1 TB external drive for backup and data storage files but plan to update to a Thunderbolt external drive as soon as prices drop a bit.

I had to order the computer since they don't have the MacBook Pro's with the SSD drives in the store so I should have it in about a week's time.

In the end the vote was 50/50 in the survey but I'm really looking forward to having a shiny new apple to play with. This laptop will be put out in the garage where it will be handy for looking up parts for the bikes.

Whilst I am learning to deal with the OSX system I will be relying on my personal computer guru BeemerDons to quide me through all the applesauce. I figure I'm screwed.
