I know it's a strange post for the FJR forum, but I also know there are some really sharp old racers around here!

I've got an old Bultaco model 16 4 speed Matador that I've turned into a fake model 10 trials bike.

I'm toying with the idea of putting a reed block on it just for fun. I would like to tap into someones previous experience rather than jump in trial and error.

Ever done it or know anyone who has? :dntknw:

You can put a reed block on the intake of any piston-port 2-stroke with the benefit of maybe cleaning-up the intake part of the cycle (no pressure tending to go back through an open port into the intake tract). But, it does offer a restriction to intake (especially if it isn't necessary -- mild porting). The previous applies to 2-strokes, generally.

I'm no Bultaco expert; but, they put reed-valves on the intake of m-xers just for the previous purpose late in their career. These weren't 'case-reed' or anything fancy -- just reed-valves in the intake (probably allowing more intake porting?).

If your looking for trials engine performance you're talking (usually) the mildest of engine porting -- small ports that are closed for much of the piston's travel. A reed valve set-up in your intake certainly won't hurt anything -- but, won't be of much benefit either (I think?). What you want is Sherpa T cylinder, piston, carb (carb. size,), and maybe exhaust -- these are the trials parts. Also, with trials engines: Sherpa T and Alpina (for example) you get trials gearing in the g/box -- with something like 3 fairly close gears, a wider jump to 4th, and a 5th road gear.

One thing that's easy to do to make your bike a trials bike (for starters) is put a really big rear sprocket on it.

Good luck.

go to the GT750 (water buffalo) forum on yahoo groups. there are some real 2 stroke fanatics there and several times I've seen threads about converting the WB to reed valves.
