To be transparent, I'm seekign information on places that are open to dual sports around Washington State.

To help aid me in researching if I want a dual sport bike, I figure it'll help to know what areas, radiating out from Kirkland, are accessable.

being new to the region for this topic, I need to understand things such as:

1 - any OHV parks nearby that are accessible?

2 - what's the deal with Fire Service roads? (I think so long as the gate is open, I can explore, but maybe that's incorrect?)

3 - groups of organized dual sport riders I can source online, but I am interested to hear form folks with experience in this area of riding - groups to avoid, events that are "must do", etc.

4 - is it even realistic to think there are entertaining places to explore within say, one hour of my home (98033/Kirkland)? I'm thinking 1 hour, one way riding time, then off in the cuds, then one hour back - that type of thing. (No trailer at this time, so no tow/play option really.)

What I like:

1 - ah, fire service roads. :)

2 - two-tracks

3 - not really into jumping and very technical single tracks - more open, less technical single tracks, sure

4 - like to see the scenery

5 - rock hoping, while cool, is somehting I'll need to build skills for - speaking of which, consider my skills at riding offroad as negligible

So, I'm hoping that by gathering data from this crowd of trusted souls, it'll help me understand if this is even the direction I want to go in.

Capital Forest (SW of Olympia), Tahouya State Forest (Belfair), Reader Pit (Mt. Vernon area?), Walker Valley (currently closed - but suppose to reopen when- unknown)

ORV Park - Straddle Line (SR 8 near McCleary)

Easton/Cle-Elum Ridge - Forest Service riding area

Naches - SR 410 East side of Chinook Pass

Several areas NW of Wenatchee (forgot the names)

Gifford-Pinchote(?) National Forest

Tillimook ORV area in Oregon is awesome too. (If you have a plate you have to buy their ORV tag also, it is cheap)

There are many go to DNR website and root around, also US Forests and you can find many areas.

I'd recco buying a dual-sport just to do this ride alone:

Of course, then -- you may want to keep it for more trail riding? :)

There are Yahoo Groups for dual sport riders for Oregon and Washington.

You can check out soundrider.com as Tom Mehren has a few books on dual sport rides in Oregon and Washington. Soundrider also puts on the annual rally in the Columbia River Gorge, encompassing dual sports, sport tourers, and sportbikes. Dualsport NW info: https://www.soundrider.com/dsport/rally/

If you haven't already, go poke around on advrider.com

LOTS of dual-sport guys over there, and regional forums like there are here, including the PNW.
