I'm looking to buy a used Russell seat from a forum member I have a 05 Has to be in good condition Any leads to purchase one would also be a big help Thanks

Ski, just go ahead and buy one from Russell that is built to your dimensions, you'll be much happier. Been the used route and it was a miserable ride.

Not a good item to buy used, unless you find sa seller with exactly the same height and weight, with the same shaped butt as yours. You might get lucky, but you also might get very uncomfortable.

On the used seat deal, it's often not as big an issue as some believe. Pretty much any custom seat is a far better constructed seat than the stock Yamaha seat is to begin with. True, it's not shaped for your butt, but once you have the seat, it's possible to have it adjusted for less coin than buying a new one. In some cases this might be equal to getting one new for yourself, in other cases much cheaper.

You might check this thread out too. Not a Russell, but a Rich's. Very good seat too. LINKY Probably go for a great price.

I'm going with OCfjr on this one. I have a Russell Day-Long and I'm twice removed from the guy it was made for. I ran into a fellow who wanted a Sargent, which I had, and he had a Russell, which I wanted. The deal was we traded short term so we could both ride in the other's saddle before a permanent exchange. I put in a 12-hour day on the Russell and loved it, so the trade was made. If you can put in some saddle time before purchasing a used one that would be the perfect deal.

FYI, Russell will adjust your seat for the same amount a new one cost. If it were your seat originally and for some reason you gained or lost weight then yes they would adjust your seat. In this case being the second or third owner it will cost you just as much as a new customer, which technically, you would be.

Two questions:

1. Some people get annoyed when I check their butt shape. Is it them or me?

2. Is 'bony' a shape?

3. I looked at the Russell order form but I missed the question on butt shape.

Oh, I guess that was 3 questions, but I'm too lazy to go back and edit. :)

Technically YOU make the butt shape...Russell expects you to finish fit the seat to you, they even tell you it'll take 600-700 miles to 'break in'. Thats to give the seat time to conform to your ***. I sat on a few Russell seats before sending my stock seat off to be day-longified. No two were the same. Perfect example is my brother and me... he has almost a bubble butt... my pants fall off without a tight belt. He would leave a very different 'dent' in the seat after break-in.

I couldn't buy a used russell, but then I have a virtually no butt.

I would say if you can wear the same pants as the seller then you'll probably be ok... just be aware that you may have to break-in some new areas of the seat.

Im on my 3rd used custom seat from members on here. Not happy with any of them. Not sure what to do next. I would buy a Russell if I knew it would be comfortable. Im not sure I want to break in a seat for 700 miles of *** pain. Got an airhawk and so far its the best thing I have bought for comfort. I want something that is comfortable from the first ride.

Not sure where the 700 mile break in comment came from. Russell told me I may experience some break in during the first 400 miles. I rode 250 the first day, then did a SS2k ride. I didn't notice any discomfort at all. I also didn't notice any 'break in' discomfort, or change in the quality of the seat.

I have to ask Ed, what kind of butt do you have? If you're a skinny guy with a bony butt, forget about custom seats. You simply lack the necessary butt for riding comfortably. If that's not the case, the answer seems simple, go get a new custom seat made just for you.

edit - I'm also curious how long it takes you to ride 700 miles? Or perhaps better, how far do you ride before you experience discomfort now? Or why you think you'd be in pain during break in?

While there was some "break-in" time on my Russell, I think it was mostly getting the wings to flatten out some and take shape to my derriere. The first couple of times I rode with the seat on I was not ever in pain, but a little uncomfortable because I wasn't used to a seat poking up behind your thighs. To be 100% honest ('cause I generally am only 10% honest... ;) ) I don't really know if it as the Russell seat that changed or mine. I may have just got used to the feeling, and now it is pure bliss.

Never a sore butt day. Ever. 10 - 12 hours in the saddle are no problem.

Sore back, neck, wrist, knees, etc. etc... sure.

But the Russell cradled butt is a happy butt.

I will add that one of my prior seats before breaking down and getting the Russell was a Rick Mayer dual custom made for a person very close to my shape. The comfort was not even in the same league as the Russell.

The only pain I have is where my legs attach to my ***. No problems anywhere else. Road 380 miles yesterday with my airhawk. No discomfort at all. Im really not sure what to do next. When I run the airhawk on the latest and favorite custom seat the seating is a little to high. No big deal but it changes how everything else fits. First custom seat I bought off here was a corbin that was a ride in for a guy almost exactly my size. Problem is im kinda short and so was the last owner of the seat. Seems the last owner wanted something to help him reach the ground. Seat height isnt a concern of mine. Stock seat height is fine with me. The last one I just bought looks nice. Was told it might be a Rocky Meyer. Seat looks super nice. Leather covered. But so far the thing kills my *** in the first 50 miles. Should I just keep putting miles on it till its broken in? The previous owner never broke it in due to getting a russell. I love the way it looks and I like it over the corbin because I can move around on the seat. The corbin only had one seating posistion. Any ideas? Sorry to hi jack this thread.

Sounds like the prior owner did not like it much, and probably put some miles on it. I would sell it and get one made for you by Russell , Rich's or one of the others. You should not need the airhawk also, on a custom seat.

The seats that really support your butt and give you the best long distance comfort will also be a little hard to move around on in the twisties. You just have to learn how to shift your weight without sliding your butt. If you can post some pictures of your current saddle, we could probably tell you if it's a Rocky Mayer or a Rick Mayer (big difference). The Rocky Mayers are supposed to be nearly as good comfort wise as a Russell.

But if you really want the most comfortable seat you'll have to order one (either a Russell or Rocky Mayer) custom tailored to you. Don't bother with the Rick Mayer or Rich's. They will not give you the same amount of comfort.

The picture on the guys add on here is gone. Its the one that you posted that it looked like a rocky meyer. I dont know. The quality is awesome. Genuine leather. Looks great. Its on a stock seat pan. Looks like its never been used. No label anywhere. Its hard like a corbin, but its not a corbin. As far as miles I ride. It just depends on time. Last week I rode right at 600 miles. I always get in a couple hundred a week.

OK, I remember that ad. Yeah, that did look like a Rocky Mayer seat. I'm surprised it is as hard as a Corbin. I thought they had cornered the market on hardness.

The Russell is not as hard as a Corbin. But it is still fairly firm. Firmer than the stock for sure. The idea is that the shape matches your backside so it doesn't have to squish to conform. Anyway, sorry the Mayer seat isn't working out for you. It is a nice looking seat and other folks have had good luck with them.
