Looking for suggestions. Leaving L.A. for 2-4 (maybe 5) days in early Aug.

As an aside, having read some of the other threads started in this part of the forum, clearly my definition of a LD ride is different than the more seasoned riders here. Lol!

Ah, heck, it's a good one to start with. :)

DO watch your weather forecast. Snow can still happen this time of year at elevation -- we're supposed to get 2 days of it this week above 6,000 feet. Bryce Canyon for example is 8,000-9,000, and of course the passes in CO get way up there too.

Oh boy! Thanks for the heads up! I'll be sure to bring appropriate gear!

Ha! Thanks! I thought I had checked the appropriate forecasts. I had not! Looks like Bryce Canyon has temps expected between lows of 20s and highs of 40s, and wet!

Hmmmmm. I think I might fly to visit Dad and leave this most epic of rides for fairer weather....

Snow can happen in the higher elevations any time of the year. We had to ride down from Pikes Peak while looking around the sides of our extra-tall windshields on our Wings because they packed with snow that started while we were in the Visitor's Center -- in August.

[That was also when only the bottom half of the road was paved so it was riding on snail snot around the guard-rail-less switch backs.]

So go with the idea of having a range of gear but also with a determination to keep informed about the weather ahead and a willingness to change up your plans on the fly.
