Well, The trucking company that i was employed with for 13 years **** canned me yesterday for what they call "Service Failure" They refused to explain what EXACTLY they meant by that, And it was not open for debate... I can only assume that their reasoning was that i was at the top of the pay scale with 4 weeks vacation available, And several people under me doing the same job for a lot less money... ******* criminals. <_<

This could be a blessing in disguise though... I was really getting burned out with my job and looking for a change anyways, But i always did my work correctly.

I have no real experience in anything else though, So that makes it real hard to find a career change, Especially in this bad economy.

So, This is my sad story...

I am willing to move anywhere and learn a new trade... I just dont know where to start! All ideas and input welcome.

I could always fall back on driving again, But i really want off the road for good. :(

That sucks Adam......now you have time to ride......

Good luck buddy, will we see you in DV March 11th?

R

Well, there are some options. One thing I found, if you don't mind going into hawk a little... Go to school. Trade school etc. Govt pays for it, get a student loan and drive on. That, with some unemployment, you will probably do quite well. Search what the best careers are and dive in. Nursing is ALWAYS hiring. Plus I found if you want to ditch on the student loans, you can easily immigrate to Canada with that profession. As long as you have held the job for a year! (was in interesting fact I learned about Canada the other day).

That is the best one I can think of.

Sorry to hear the news Adam.

Sooo, male stripper? :dribble: Ok, maybe not that.

It's a tough process, but are there any things you really want to do? What kind of atmosphere would you prefer to work in? Can you get training in something that fits those ideas, or afford to go in as a low pay/learning position?

Try not to make a hobby you love into a job. You'll just end up hating the hobby. That's about the only advice I can offer at the moment.

Short term, go to a local temp agency and fill out their hiring stuff. Usually a questionnaire to determine skills and background. Then just let them send you to some different places. You might be surprised and find something you enjoy that can pay the bills too.

Long term, maybe it's time to decide where you would really like to live, then see what jobs are needed in that area?

Lots of cute girls in nursing too, but I hear it can be very hard to get into nursing school.

Didn't our gov't make some changes to school loans last spring? Something like payments will never exceeed a certain portion of your income, and after ten years what's left is forgiven?

That isn't all they are doing. Its all getting consolidated too into one place. But is just like a gov't operation, call and never get to anyone that knows anything.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Best of luck.

I'd go for something in an area that is experiencing explosive growth right now: Federal Government Jobs.

I've never understood it when people think payroll is the first thing to cut, which you imply may have been behind this. Good people have value, and other people with less experience don't do "the same job," or have the same insights, or the same productivity.

Sucks balls, and I wish I had more encouragement to offer. Hope something good comes along soon.

Maybe with the previous two posts in mind, you could go into student loans. God, wouldn't that be great?!?!? Pushing paper for something that promises to be worse than the IRS in a few years!!!

(I'll be quiet now, and stop pushing the 'P' envelope.)

Sorry to hear you lost your job Adam. Its hard to visualize being unemployed until it happens to you. To suddenly have your income come to a stop really sucks, especially in this economy.

I have a niece and her husband just moved to Havasu because they just obtained truck driving jobs. They have been drivers for some time, but lost their previous jobs because the trucking company went under owing them several weeks pay.

Better not waste any time and get your name on the unemployment rolls asap until something comes along.

Good luck Adam!

OK, I don't know you, so I don't know if you'd be a good fit in this profession or not, but it's wide open, from what I hear. You'd be getting in right on the ground floor. Click me. If that doesn't work out, well, best of luck. I've got a couple companies-going-bankrupt type stories in my background too. Probably too early for you to do what I do. Retirement. :D

Hope you don't mind the kidding. I do wish you luck.

Sorry to hear about that...almost sounds like a move "Big Orange" would do. I drove for 12 years and know how that goes. I got laid off last year from my cushy internet job, quite unexpectedly, and had to do unemployment for about 2 months. Our locale around here is basically akin to the fuzz collection point in an arse crack, so jobs were few and far between....unless you wanted to be a nurse or telemarketer of course. I was in line for some retraining at the local community college and needed only to take some 7th grade level tests to qualify for assistance (sucks, but it's a requirement for the education program). Day before testing, got a call out of the blue from a former associate who had taken over some business...been there ever since.

Something will pop up; just be sure to look into all the government assistance programs out there...we pay for them, might as well use them. :D

Yep..., "When one door closes -- another one opens..."

The pros in the job biz often say look to associates, friends, and relatives for help/leads.

There are many cases where something that wasn't even on your 'horizon' works out better than expected. Like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Starbucks_Saved_My_Life

And don't rule-out starting your own business. The other day I saw an Econoline van that advertised mobile oil & filter changes -- at your home. Hmmm, I thought -- I bet that's a pretty good gig?

Good luck

Sorry to hear this Adam as well. The few years I worked driving I saw some real cut-throat companies in the trucking industry. Not like it use to be before deregulation when drivers meant something. There are some companies out there who do care but seemed like they were local companies and not OTR operators.

You could try schooling as one mentioned as the gov't is handing out some loans right now with the new govt' push. But you might have to give up your first born as payback.

Go with what the good Lord has given ya and look at what natural gifts you already posses as a start. Right now the medical fields are planing on hiring in the next 1 to 2 years as babyboomers are all getting older and heading to the hospital. Also, realestate is starting to pickup again here in Cali but at a stuttering pace. And not to be morbid, but funeral sales industry are increased as well with some good paychecks. I have family in these businesses. Just being real here.

I'm disabled and also am looking for a new career. If you come up with some good ideas let me know. I'll send out some prayers in your direction so not to giveup. Blessings, Painman. <>< :D

Thanks for the good wishes and ideas!

I applied to the Pepsi job locally, But they are not hiring here. I also found another driving job, But it's a last resort.

Hows come you didn't marry a woman with a good job that could support you and buy your gas and farkles and tires for the feejer, so that you could take off and ride into the sunset anytime you want? Huh? Huh?
