After I mounted my wheels back on today, I wanted to make sure all was good, So with it on the center stand

I started it up, put it in gear. I could hear a loud clunking noise in the drive system

(it's not coming from the rear next to the Wheel)

it's coming from the front where it connects to the trans.

It may of always done this I'm not sure, this was the first time I've run it on the center stand in gear.

I'm used to the clunk you hear when it goes in gear from neutral. BUT it just didn't sound normal?

Is this something to be concerned with?

Thanks

Probably not. These bikes are not really designed to run smoothly with no drive loads - the slop in the drivetrain can get in sync with the engine's natural power vibrations and make a racket. Not really good for the bike either. If it runs normally off the stand, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sounds like your tranny blew up....better get over to the dealer and have them order another one.

There is a U-joint in that area. There is a remote chance that is bad. But more than likely just driveline slop as markjenn stated.

It sounds like driveline lash. If you put your hand or a rag against the rear wheel gently (applying light pressure), the snatch should go away or at least antenuate for the most part.

I did the same thing on mine and it really caught my attention. Sounded like a bucket of bolts! I would not suggest the hand or rag thing but just apply a little rear brake with some throttle and that will take the lash out of the drivetrain. It smooths right out.

I think you are right about the noise being in the engine side of things. I think it is the 90 degree drive gears in the transmission that create most of the lash. I am going to get into them this winter. There must be a procedure to shim out some of the lash. Whatever the factory has them set to is too much.

And did you get an "ABS" warning light when you ran it on the center stand? I did. Seems the ABS computer noticed the discrepancy between front and rear wheel speed. Smart little guy.

Thanks ya'll, I feel better now!

Happy 2 wheel'in

+1 - I used to work with a guy who liked to put his bike on the center stand and idle it in gear to lube the chain. He lost about a half inch from his pointer finger one day when his hand slipped. Imagine what the FJR could do if your hand got caught on something.
