I had my stock mufflers off the bike the other day ( for what ever reason ) and went for a short ride with just the open header. Yeah I know some of you will say, WHY? Well, because I could!

Thats not some thing I will do again but, was wondering what it could hurt. Will it burn exhaust valves?

One thing I learned while riding with an open exhaust and hearing the exhaust note,is I really baby my bike and could push her a lot farther then I do. There is a lot more power there then I would normally use. :yahoo:

Exhaust valves burn because a motor is running too lean. By removing the mufflers, you in effect allow more air to be drawn into the combustion chamber because you eliminate or reduce back pressure, thus causing your bike to run lean. However, with most motors now running CPU's, your computer "should" detect the leaner burn and automatically compensate for it by allowing less O2 and more fuel. The old story of removing back pressure reduces torque and causes exhaust valves to burn was a lot of hype, although with a carburetor, jetting needed to be changed to enrich the fuel mixture.

However, doing what you did too often could affect your pocket book to pay for the tickets you'll get for being too noisy.

Go out and blow by some Hardly boyz at redline..Great fun!.. Did that a lot on my open piped FJ1200. gawd was that loud..
