Following the great instructions on FJRTECH, there was lubrication on the splines probably Lithium. I would like to clean that completely and replace them with Pro Moly 60. Can I use WD40? what do you recommend? Any Do's or Don't's?

Also, add ProMoly60 on the whole Driveshaft as well I assume?

Thanks

BigD

You can used WD-40 to clean them, no problem there.

No! Use the Moly60 only on the splines.... you can *lightly* coat the length of the driveshaft with universal grease as a means to prevent/****** corrosion, but using the expensive Moly60 for this task is a waste.

Something I wasn't aware of the first time I did the job is that on the universal where the shaft goes into the engine, there are 2 (two) sets of splines.

I had thought (incorrectly) that the universal was on a shaft which extended into the engine. Not the case.

The "universal" has splines where it connects to the stub shaft coming out of the engine AND on the other end where it connects to the drive shaft. Both of these need doing.

Once you have the left footpeg bracket off. rear diff and and the dust shields around the universal you should be able to remove the universal assembly pretty easily.

BigD, I just did the spline lube as per FJRTech, and I also removed and cleaned the U-joint as Colin says. Only about 10-15 minutes more time but well worth it. The splines inside the u-joint were a little light in the lube dept too. First you'll need to go get a Torx T-50 driver to remove one screw on the foot peg bracket. (Why can't Yammi use a more normal style fasteners here?) And be careful of the side stand. It drops out somewhere in this process. All straight forward though. More info here:

I cleaned with WD-40 and left a film coating via oily rag. Splines have Moly 60 paste.

As always thanks to the dedicated FJR pilots who have be down this road before and documented it so well.

FJReady

Bounce, Colin, Warchild, FJRReady...these were some excellent instructions. I took out the U-Joint as instructed. Although there was some lube there, sure was dirty. Cleaned it with some WD-40 and then Lubed the splines with some Pro Moly 60.

Thanks again for your write ups. Now comes the tough part. Tourqe to specs or

-10%

lube the u-joint both ends for sure. But, you dont have to take the footpeg bracket off to do it. Ive done at least 7 of them and all you have to do is wiggle it out. It goes back in the same way. one other trick I use is to take a 24" screw driver and stick it in the shaft housing in order to straigten out the angle of the u-joint so that the shaft slides right back in. Ive seen some FJR's that had plenty of grease on the engine output shaft and some that were bone dry. So check it to be sure.
