Mag Blaster Horn problems

So I'm riding in the pouring rain today doing about 75 on the interstate when I suddenly hear this loud ass '58 Buick blowing it's horn right under my nose. It startles me as I KNOW no other vehicle is near me, then I realize it's my horn I'm hearing!!! Quick stab at the horn button ---nothing but LOUD constant horn sound! :angry03: ****... I hit the horn button a couple more times---still constant horn, so on with the 4 way flashers and at the first safe opportunity pull to side of interstate and stop, then I kind of push and wiggle on the horn button, let go and horn stops (finaly). I just look at the button and the G.D. thing goes off again while I'm looking at it mg2: (enough to scare the **** out of you while parked on the side of a busy interstate in the pouring rain while you're peering down in the space below the handle bars). I stab the horn button and mercifully it stops this time. Wait couple seconds find suitable space in traffic and zoom off again. In the next 20 miles it does it a couple more times, but each time a quick push of the horn button shuts it up :blushing: (not before getting strange looks from the cagers trying to figure out why I'm riding in the rain to start with and WTF I'm blowing my horn for) :bigeyes:

I installed the Mag Blaster horns with the FJRandy wire harness about a year to a year and a half ago (easy install and have had no problems since- till now). The horn works correctly when I push the button But this new "auto on" feature needs to be fixed fast.

What do ya-all think? Did water get to the horn relay? Is this what happens when the horn switch "fries" (like I've read it can do without the proper wiring harness and the Mag Blasters installed). Or are there other possibilities??? An experienced "wrench" I'm not, nor an electrical genius. :huh:

Sounds like water/crud in the button (No, really it sounds like BWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ).

Pull apart the switch assembly and clean it.

That SHOULD handle it.

That's funny because I had just installed the Cal Sci tall windshield and had accelerated to almost 80 when the horn started and my first thought was some kind of warning that something was fing up.

On the housing IIRC just don't loose the screws!

If you need to take the switch apart there will be a spring and springs like to go "Sprong" and get lost, just be aware of that and don't try to rush anything.

Toophast, since this happened in the rain, is it possible that some water got into the switch? If so, you might try flushing it out with some WD-40 before you disassemble it. The same with the connections on the relay. I mounted mine up inside the nose piece for the very reason of road spray on rainy days.

I am surprised that the horn switch can't handle a little water. When I installed my blasters I used the Radio Shack relay and it does not look water proof so I sealed all the seams with silicon gasket goop. I thought I was being so smart......

Mike, Since I would have to take my hand guard off to get to the screws for the switch assembly I hosed the hell out of the switch with WD 40 this morning (lazy mans switch cleaning- or someone with no time) So far so good on the 30 mile ride home I had hoped I was doing an "okay" thing to do when I did it and sounds like it was - thank you

My relay is in the nose behind panel C (right side, top panel) but SUCH a PITA to get to I'm going to see if this does it...if not then I'll take the switch housing apart and have a look and get under that damn panel at the relay to check it out too.

Well, that is too funny, :yahoo: since you were not hurt, didn't jump off bike and did not cause someone to slam on their brakes from cer terror!

Hope you had ear plugs in, also hope you are able to correct with out that much effort.

BTW how far did you have to ride before you could turn the key off? :assassin:

Had to go about 400 yards before it was a safe place to pull onto the shoulder. Had mashed on the horn button a few times after stopping and was reaching for the key when the horn shut off by itself (yes I did think of turning the key off to stop the damn noise) :glare:

Follow up note: since I would have to take handguards etc off to take apart the switch housing I blasted the switch with WD-40 mult times from as many angles as I could. So far the horn has only worked when I want it to since then, however, I haven't had the opportunity to ride in the pouring rain since either...
