O.K. I've got a question
If you didn't stick a magnet on your oil filter, where would those particles end up?

In the paper element? So what are you gaining?

And, since there is no filtering of the final drive oil... Isn't the magnet on that drain plug more of a "something is better than nothing" solution? It's only going to hold the largest ferrous chips anyway. Right? Adding a magnet to your crank case drain plug attracts particles that would end up in your filter anyway.

For the most part I agree with you. I operate on the, "do no harm", philosphy. It doesn't hurt anything to have the magnets there. The majority of the particles captured by the magnet would get trapped in the filter anyway. The value of the magnet on the drain plug to me is, that when I change the oil and something is wearing adnormally, the stuff on the magnet won't be normal.

Automatic transmissions have magnets in bottom of the pan, high end cars have magnetic drain plugs, differentials have magnets, by golly, my fjr will get a magnet too :D

You are right... I just wanted to SEE some of the metal particles to monitor wear and any possible bigger problems that should be looked after.

Neat idea BUT, I agree with Joe2lmaker's above statements.
