Just attempting to learn mapsource again and I was curious if when creating multiple "loops" are you guys using one file all originating from home? Or do you open up a new mapsource file for each new route? If I open a new one all of my points of interest and waypoints are gone. If you load a new mapsource file into the GPS will all of my waypoints be gone in the GPS as well?

Thanks

Ah, Mapsouce!

I have it. I use it. I hate it.

But, to your question. If I am creating multiple routes that have things in common or are similar, I do "save as" and give it another name. Then modify it to your liking. But that's just me, and I'm not at all good at it so maybe someone that actually knows something will chime in here to help.

With the help of other members here I chaose Microsoft Street & Trips and Love it! When creating a Round Robin trip I make separate files. Each file is saved with a title designating a small town, scenic patk or some other 'POI' near the half way point. This way, when deciding on which rout to ride we just ask a few questions of interest such as How long do you want to be gone, what would you like to see and/or any particular direction (ie. N, S, E, W). This will usually narrow down the options. I now have loops ranging from 1-10 hours.

I use separate files for each route or loop. And, I name each route w/ a name of some place along the route to positively identify it. But, I also avoid using Mapsource as much as possible since it is so difficult (non-intuitive) and tedious to use.

Personal preference to whether you do 1-route/file or multiple. But since the main reason you're using MapSource presumably is to develop a set of routes for transfer to the GPS, I tend to thnk in terms of trips or large areas where I'll be on a trip. If you split your routes across lots of files, it will be tedious to have to re-open each file, do a transfer, re-open another, etc. I suppose you could start several instances of MapSource and do it that way too.

Thinking in terms of "areas" also matches up with the selection of which maps to have selected for transfer.

It's not intuitiively obvious how you move routes between MapSource files. AFAIK, the only way to do so is to open two instances of MapSource, select routes in one window, copy to the clipboard, and paste into the other window. You can do the same with via points so this is the way you concatentate routes together.

It depends. I try to use a single file per year. That gives me a log of routes for posterity. It doesn't work out when I download routes from other people or when I create a new route directly on the GPS.

As MarkJenn says, you can copy the file which has your waypoints and the delete the old routes and make new ones.

I use seperate files based on the trip I'm taking. Example, my eom trips are in their own files. When I make the new 08 eom trip file, I will open the 07 eom files, save as 08 eom, and build from there.

I build all my "journeys" almost exclusively in MS Streets&Trips. Then I convert the journey into a GPX file and import it into MapSucks er MapSource. After doing any final/necessary touchup in MapSource, I open another MapSource session and copy/paste the total route into the new file once(1) for every day of the trip.

The idea is to create a separate route for each day with its unique name. I guess you were just asking "one file or more". Answer: one route per day, multiple routes per trip, one file per trip (typically). When I return home the most difficult part is to remember to download the friggin data from the GPS to save the track files and routes for future reference.

Now join hands and say it with me... "MapSource sucks, MapSource sucks, MapSource sucks!" Feel better???

What version of Streets and trips do you use? Is there a free version out there anywhere?
