% Markup on new FJR's

Yes I searched this and did not find the answer to my question but you will probably all shoe me where it is. I am prepared for the dog pile, but here goes anyway. Not to mention it will give you all something to do.

Does anyone know the markup on new FJR's. I know that cars usually get somewhere around 10% and wondered if bikes were the same. When I ordered my 08 last month, the dealer banged off over 1k without batting an eye. Final price before tax, title, tags was $12600. I figured this was a pretty good deal. He still had a brand new 07 on the floor, and said that if I put money down he would make me a "hell of a deal" as it would help his numbers with Yamaha. He didn't want to order any 08's since he still had the 07 there. Asked me if I was interested in the 07 as he could really deal it. Told him I wasn't interested due to the color so I didn't even ask the price. Just wondering if anyone knows what the markup is on new bikes? Am I getting the deal I think I am, or am I getting rooked. Everything is such a secret in the car and bike world.

No it doesn't make much difference to me, but just curious what the rest of the FJR world thinks. Was hoping to find some honest dealer out there willing to tell me that this guy is either fair or raking me over the coals. I firmly believe that dealers are entitled to make a living, but don't want them making all their money on me.

12600 is what I paid for my 2007 when it came out. OTD was 13750 (california) so what you really want to know is what is the otd price. One dealer said he would have sold it to me for 12200, but he quoted me that price after he didn't get back to me and knew I had already made my purchase so it doesn't count.

A dealer in Ohio offering 2008 FJR1300A's for $12,899 on Cycletrader. In California, you can currently get a new 2007 FJR1300A for $12,199 Out the Door which is a pretty attractive price. I would say your price is very competitive for a current year model.

My dealer in Alex MN has an 07 For Sale in the high 11's. Not one mile on it. Said it was his COST. I don't know if that is true totally. He said though his mark up (if I remember correctly) was under 10%. He told me that Yamaha's mark up is closer to 30% from what it cost to make the bikes. He was telling me this so freely because he had just gotten in an argument with the Yamaha rep about his order. He wasn't to happy.

For the what it's worth department though, he said of all the bikes he has sold since he has had the Yamaha dealership, the FJR owners that have bought from him can't say enough great things about the bike. That would include me. He says they just love their bikes.

Local dealer in Indiana was selling 07A's this spring for $11,799, supposedly $200 over his cost. Of course on top is the setup charges and 6% sales tax bringing it to $12,900. They were making money selling the YES for $800.

Any price less than MSRP on a pre order new year model is a great buy. I would be very happy getting an 08 at 1,000 under MSRP.

If your dealer is knocking off a grand off the top, go for it. In Ca. your real lucky if that happens. The numbers presented are a fair estimate of dealer profits. Enjoy the new ride and safety first....PM. <><

Dealer invoice on most Japanese streetbikes is about 84% of MSRP.

Also, dealers get a holdback credit twice a year - doesn't show on their invoices. But they are paid a percentage (usually 5%) of the retail value of whatever they delivered. So 'cost' isn;t quite 'cost'. But it isn't easy to make a living based on 5% profit.

10% off MSRP is a good guide (I have friends and family in the auto and bike business).

Don't get sucked into petty tricks, cut to the chase and haggle on OTD price. Be willing to walk.

When they are so willing to drop price in a heartbeat, watch to see if it is added back in other ways...maybe not.

Picked up my new '07 today. $13384.08 OTD. That means everything; TTL, dealer fees, etc.

https://www.cyclebuy.com has "dealer invoice" including what holdback percentage the dealers are getting. You have to pay something about $15 for the report on a model of bike and the information does not come straight from Yamaha so caveat emptor. But, it did work when I used the numbers in their report to make a deal on my wife's '07 V Star 1100 and I got my '07 FJR for $11,800 ($12,800 OTD).

The proper way to compare prices nationally is 'out the door' BEFORE TTL, which means all 'junk fees' (like assembly, freight, etc) included, but all registration taxes excluded.

Why? just as an example, in neighboring NM I'd pay 3% tax, but in TX I pay 6.25%, plus much more for title and license as well. On the FJR, that equates to about $450 more after TTL. And if you buy out of state, like I usually do, 'out the door' means TTL excluded anyway. Later.
