Recalculating: Now in the OC!
The Rallybubba says he'll make the official announcement tomorrow, but it was announced on the riders' discussion board today.

If you don't have plans for Memorial Day, you've gotta ride this one.

This is roughly 30 hour rally and considered one of the best in the east. Rick and his staff do an outstanding job. It pulls in the best rally riders on this side of the Misissippi but is also very rookie friendly. He has two classes -- one for experienced LD riders and one for inexperienced. He also always sets up a Saddlesore 1K ride for anyone who doesn't yet have an IBA membership. If you've been looking to do one but didn't want to hassle with setting up witnesses and handling the paperwork, here's your chance.

The web site is https://www.masondixon20-20.org. Click on the quarter for this year's stuff.

I'm unaffiliated, by the way, except as a rider. This was the first LD rally I ever did, though, and it's the only one I make sure to ride each year.

I'm not familiar with this type of rally at all so please forgive me.. How many miles are you supposed to ride to complete one of these things?

Well, that's pretty much up to the rider. Think of it as a 30 hour scavenger hunt. The Rallybubba will give you locations that -- if I know Rick -- will range from Maine to the Florida Keys. At each location, you need to take a photo or answer a questions (say, from a historical marker) that proves you were there. Each location has a point value and the most points wins. YOU decide, though, which locations you want to go to. No one can hit them all. Sorting out which are impossible from those which are important and plotting your route are big parts of the challenge. The winner is rarely the one with the most miles, at least not in this rally.

Some folks ride a few hundred miles and head back for drinks, which is certainly not frowned upon as long as you don't throw up on the rally staff.

Last year, the less experienced group had a 1300 mile cap while the more experienced group had a 1300 mile floor. This year, both groups will have a cap but we won't know what is until bonus locations are posted sometime in May -- maybe not until we show up at the rally. Rallybubbas are like that. And, of course, if you do the SS1K, well, you'd ride a little over 1000 miles.

Except for the term "rallybubba" it is fairly similar in concept to other rallies....especially the part about not throwing up on rally staff. Funny, I've never seen it in any rules, but it's just a common knowledge thing ;)

It sounds like a hoot and perfect for the uninitiated! I wish I could do my first rally again. Nothing more pure than a rally virgin making dumb mistakes, but still able to finish and feel like they've accomplished something epic in magnitude.

This may be a case where you might need to avoid being thrown up on by the rally staff. :)

Very fun group, and a first class event.

I think the theme this year is Head's or Tails. I've got a good idea where one of the bonus' might be. I also know a shortcut.

Still working on the wife.

That's pretty close. The theme is actually "A Quarter for your Thoughts." The two groups are Heads and Tails -- Heads for riders with "extensive experience," tails for less experienced riders. And I liked Rick's comment about that on the web site: "Yes, we see the irony of calling the bigger Pain in the Ass group 'Heads' and not 'Tails'."

Oh, c'mon. You can't give this group a straight line like that.
