May 1st through May 9th ride throughout the Texas Hill country

April 30th is my last day at this **** Hole Gig. The next day I plan to load up (my 1st road trip) and head to Lost Maples State Natural Area, my Wife will drive up the following day after work. The Plan is to spend the weekend riding around the area. This will be my beautiful wife's first time as pillion on the FJR. She will be heading back home on the morning of the 5th while I continue on to another State Park, yet to be determined, for 2 nights, move on to another on the 7th before heading home on the 9th........all depending on the weather. I would welcome any "gotta see/do" suggestions, would also welcome meeting/riding with any forum folks as well. The Lone Star Motorcycle Museum is already 1st on my list.

This trip is going to be on a budget. I plan to use this as a "Learner" for future road trips. Feel free to PM me

Google "Bat Tunnel" for an interesting stop near New Brunsfel. Read carefully to determine of the bats are there in early May.

The german food (and beer) in New Brunsfel for that matter is as good as it gets.

I suppose a stop in Lucenbach (sp?) is a Rite of Passage for any biker. I spent 15 minutes there to get the obligatory picture and moved on. Your wifey may enjoy that scene, though.

You must take the day hike in Lost Maples. Either loop is worth the walk. Get up early and hit the trail before the crowd gets there for a much more enjoyable experience.

Ride over to the Enchanted Rock state park - give them the ridiculous entry fee and climb up on the rock. That was kind of cool.

You could ride over to the Little Canyon area and book a paddle trip down the Guadalupe River. It's kind of gotten a little touristy, but the river is still very pretty and there should be plenty of flow at that time.

There's a Tex-mex place to eat in the 1-horse town of Leakey, TX - which is right on the 3 sisters roads (which you can ride perpetually the entire weekend in circles (er.... triangles) like a HUGE moto-gp course. But I digress - that tex-mex might be the best $6.00 meal you have ever eaten. Unbelievable - my mouth's watering just writing this paragraph.

The trip down highway 16 from Kerrville to Medina is a must do. Also since you are at Lost Maples take the river road back up to Hunt. There is a Mexican restaurant in Kerrville called Mamacitia's (check spelling) that is good also. Have a great time and watch the deer early in the morning.

+1 for the "watching deer" part. I simply would not ride early morning or late afternoon there. The amount of deer in those parts is staggering.

I'm also 54, and we share a name; your first, my last. If I'm still employment challenged when you come down, I'll ride with you and show you around. I've been in Austin for 12 years, and am pretty familiar with the roads.

You should pick up a copy of the latest Ride Texas, (with Dale Watson on the cover), as it has a nice section on daytrips all over the state, including the Twisted Sisters of 335/336/337.

Note that their website, as of this writing, is kinda misleading, as it states that Volume 17, Issue 1 is the current issue. It may be the current issue on the newsstands, but they mailed the Dale Watson issue, (Volume 17, Issue 2), out a week or so ago to subscribers. Get that one; it's the new bigger size, and has a lot of great info in it.

If you're looking for another park to visit, I'm kinda partial to Big Bend. It will be warm in early May, but tolerable. It's a bit of a distance, but we're on Feejers, right? It's about 7 hours in the seat from my house, so just getting the tires warmed up!
