I posted this on the other forum but thought I'd copy it here as well...

If you're coming to EOM and expecting to visit the Sophisticated Otter micro-brewery, I've got bad news and good news.

First, the bad news...The Sophisticated Otter is no longer in business. The property has been leased to a church group...seriously, I don't make this up!

Now, the good news...there is a micro-brewery in Jonesborough...abt a 10-15 minute ride from the EOM hotel.

Depot Street micro-brews can also be obtained at Earth Fare in Johnson City and at The Main Street Cafe in Jonesborough.

And, while I'm here, Johnson City is still on track to install some red light cameras that will be operational before September. Jonesborough and Kingsport already have operational red light cameras...no need to ask how I know this.

Finally, the speed limit on I-26 thru Johnson City is 55 mph. That stretch of interstate is patrolled by unmarked vehicles...at least one blue Mustang and one silver or white Mustang. The blue lights are concealed in the front grill.

They had some new dodge chargers just before I left. Those were TSHP vehicles, not the city or county guys. They still have jurisdiction on I-26 though.

Hello, Travis.

I've seen one of those unmarked cars you refer to but didn't know the make/model. It was white and had a car pulled over on the 2700 exit to Elizabethton.

I just posted this to alert EOM attendees abt the possibility of unmarked cars prowling the interstate in and around JoCy.

3 of the 4 traffic signals entering Jonesborough from JoCy on 11E are "camera enforced." Everyone I've talked to hates these things but the politicians decided it is "best for us."

Forgive this country bumpkin, my neighborhood doesn't have too many red lights, so what is "camera enforced?"
Go thru an intersection when the light is red...PFLASH!...a camera takes a photo of your vehicle in the intersection and a photo of your license plate. A couple of weeks later, a citation, along w/ the documentation, shows up in the mail. Around here, the citation fee is $100.00. You're guilty unless you can prove your innocence.

In JoCy, the politicians have framed the discussion as one of "safety." The opposition has framed the discussion as a "right to privacy." However, it is, IMHO, a "revenue enhancement" scam w/out a vote of the local population.

I don't run red lights, so I don't care!
You should care. The data show that, at camera enforced intersections, as drivers slow or even stop for stale green lights, it leads to an increase in rear end collisions. If you're on a bike, this could be disastrous...jus' sayin'.

The statistics for same cameras in Kingsport, just 15 or so miles north of Johnson City show a definite increase in rear end collisions. This is from the Kingsport Police. They say this is offset by reduction in "t bone " accidents at same intersections. I damn sure would rather take my chances/choices than to have the rear ender forced upon me. Brazos is right - these cameras are lethal for motorcyclists.

I wonder if the signal trips pick up bikes like there should? What about running a light after sitting there for a while?

Dave

Just FYI. I live here in Kingsport and the red light at the state line with Virginia is one of the money grabbers. Be careful coming out of Virginia on your way to Johnson City. Personnel experience at getting one of the tickets even though I was caging it.
