Wheatie : I was asked very politely by my boss if I could possibly take my vacation between the long weekends here in Canada. I'm an on call Tow truck / wrecker driver. Long weekends up here are busy. So this being my first year of employment with this company I really didn't want to rock the boat. They are a family run business and have treated me like family since the day I started. I have known the owners for over 20 years.

6 weeks holidays in the first year is pretty good.

Yo Moosehead, I see You and The Goalie riding between Mexicali and Loreto in a single day! Trust me, unless you ride at night that will not happen. It's 700 miles, but on the slowest roads you've ever ridden on. You absolutely don't want to ride at night in Mexico, es muy Peligro. Animals en Los Caminos!
In addition to 700+ miles on busted up pavement (Asphalt Contractors in Mexico are the Brother In Laws of the Current Governor!), in that stretch you'll be subjected to 4 separate inspections by Los Federales. Each Military Checkpoint inspection will take a minimum of 30+ minutes. More for Canucks.

PLEASE NOTE: I'm not making politics here, since Canada has trade with countries the US doesn't: Canadians have a rep as weapons smugglers!

Maria Elena got a pass because she's beautiful, they wanted to flirt with her and see her moto. Mike and Rob, you are muy Feo- no passes for you!

Plus, if you hit the checkpoint at San Ignacio after dark you can expect an hour for a very thorough inspection by the Mexican Army - es Verdad!

Any Cartel, Bandito or Narcotraficante activity in Mexico occurs under cover of darkness, the young Mexican soldiers are trigger happy at night!

I'll assist in your border crossing obtaining your Mexican Tourist Permit and escort you to the base of La Rumorosa Grade, Mexicali traffic sucks!

Also on your return June 10 you show you will be spending the night at either Bahia de Ballenas or Laguna San Ignacio; it's hard to tell from map.

Please be aware both of those destinations, either Punta Abreojos or El Almacen, are on extremely sandy roads; I barely made them on a GS!
Thanks Don, Very good points. Our itinerary is still preliminary. Since you have travelled Baja many times I would appreciate a suggested route in the time we have allotted. We really want to do La Paz because I heard there was great scuba diving there. I don't care if we go to Cabo. Other than that, anything goes.

Moosehead!

Don you old dog! Make sure you're home when we come rollin' thru.
Rolling?? I've never been there...but with all the tall tales being spouted about Don's place...you'd think you'd need to be a pro mx'er just to get down the driveway.

I wouldn't know though...Don refused to play when I came out to visit all the way from corn country...

I plan to mail off the AAA map to Rob on Tuesday, marked up with a side sheet giving my recommendations. Si Paco, there is GREAT scuba diving in La Paz. As a long time Mexico rider I much prefer La Paz over Dos Cabos, La Paz is the REAL Mexico and Cabo San Lucas is Turistica!

I'm going to lay out the route for you that SkooterG and I took to La Paz, which required 2 full riding days. If you can spare one extra day on the road on the Baja Peninsula, I highly recommend Bahia de Los Angeles for a day of diving/fishing. I once almost bought a home in Bay of LA! https://www.scubadivingbaja.com/inicio.html

Mike and Rob, I've been thinking of buying Baja Road Log by the Bell's. I'll do it and give it to you when we cross the border, give it back to me at CFR.

Mike and Rob, your thread is officially derailed. At least it made it to page 2. I hope to see you guys in central Idaho or the Beartooth area this June.

Wow. Nice back of the napkin itinerary. I'm lookin' forward to enjoying your trip vicariously through the trip reports.

You still got the Hello Kitty road laptop, Rob?

As for 6 weeks vacation... you must be livin' right. I just reached that plateau this year as a reward for workin' 30 years at the same f'n place.
