I liked 2 quotes. The first was told me by my Step-dad who was a decorated WWII Marine, who received a battlefield promotion to Sgt. on Tarawa:

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand redy to do violence on their behalf." George Orwell

And, from the Confederate Memorial, Arlington National Cemetary:

"Not for fame of reward, not for place of for rank, but in simple obedience to duty, as they understood it."

That speaks volumes for many comrades-in-arms of my generation who didn't return home.
