so last week, i ordered some SWMotech mirror widners so i'm not looking at my elbows all the time. they arived in good order, and i went out to put them on...

first, i notice that you have to dismantle most of the cockpit area of the bike to get to where the fastners that hold the mirrors are located.

the second thing i notice, as i'm pulling screws and plastic rivits, is half of the screws don't have the little plastic washers. and i'm missing one of the rivits.

now i find out i need to remove the headlight knobs also. after some quick investigation i see they are held in place with set screws....

... and both are stripped smoothe...

hmmm... now what??

When adding my Clearwater lights, I found this(https://www.fjrtech.com/getdbitem.cfm?item=7)helpful.

Also, you can take out the two panels with the headlight knobs and slide the adjustment cables out of the knobs. I also ordered some extra bits/fasteners/attachment plugs before I got started...I knew something would drop into the basement, it always does....

Get the Yamaha FZ1mirrors.

Virtually identical to the stock mirrors except the arm is a few inches longer.... no more elbow problem.

Same bolting template as OEM, EZPZ install.

Many owners have made this upgrade.

I seem to remember reading some sort of nonsense about removing the headlight knobs. HOWEVER, just remove the cables from the back of the panels.

I installed FZ1 (Gen 1) mirrors this Christmas. Big improvement! I also changed out the #^^#$@&$#! Phillips head screws to Allen head sockets for the very reason you mention. The only way I got mine out was to get a very new, very sharp Phillips head screwdriver with a very small head then push like hell when twisting out the screw. Sort of like making a new indention in the top of the screw. Once out, go to a fastener speciality store or model airplane hobby shop (Lowes won't have it) and get the Allen heads.

Hmmmm . . . . the knobs for my headlight adjusters have been out more times than I care to count. Beyond all of the basic farkeling on my machine I've changed my headlight three times (thanks Yamaha) and had to pull the entire nose cone each time. I've always used the screwdriver from the bike's tool kit, which is a perfect fit and always tighten them up real snug - no sign of stripping whatsoever.

Having said that, unscrewing the cable from the rear of the adjuster knob works, though it can be difficult to re-tighten it when reassembling the panel.
