This is a ride I did early last month down the Monterey coast and back up behind the Pinnacles.

(not my picture, but a good sample off of Google Earth of what you ride through)

Some really beautiful countryside back there; definitely worth getting off of US 101 if you've got the time to cruise.

I have to say I was pretty nervous going down the coast when the forecast called for a 20% chance of rain, albeit later in the day than when I'd be passing through. Something about having broken every right-hand side rib on damp pavement six months after I took up riding sticks with you

.

In the end, the only (ultimately not serious) problem I ran into was of my own devising. Memo to file: while it's good to be cautious about leaning more into turns on damp pavement, remember that if you don't lean enough, you can end up going wide and hitting the double-yellow. Which is generally something to be avoided, particularly when there's oncoming traffic. It's a matter of balancing risks, not simply avoiding one in such a way that you run into another.

The stretch of pavement between 198 and San Miguel (Peach Tree Road and Indian Valley Road) is one of the most beautiful, entertaining and underappreciated roads that I know of.

We probably shouldn't be talking about it if we want to keep it that way!
