Not sure if you have a specific agenda involved in your Northeast section, but I can give you some suggestions:
I understand that you are meeting someone in Montreal. Not sure why you would go there twice. I know I've never been tempted to go back. I would skip Toronto altogether if you hate congestion. But then you are also planning on going to NYC, and DC, so maybe crowds don't really bother you? I wouldn't ride anywhere near those cities on a bike.

Why are you going to Sydney, NS? Take a loop around the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island instead. You'll thank me later.

On night 21, keep going down the Airline Road (Maine Route 9) to Brewer Maine. Stop for a lobster roll for dinner at the Eagles Nest. It's a tiny hole in the wall place literally hanging over the Penobscot River that has the best (and biggest) lobster rolls in the world.

Continue down Rte 9 another 1/2 mile or so to The Colony Motel, still in Brewer. Mom 'n Pop place that is very tidy and quite reasonably priced. Park your bike outside the door. I like motels like that when I'm on the road.

Have fun!
Fred, Marianne is meeting me in Montreal to ride two up for the 2 weeks down to Key West. On the first run eastbound, I hope to avoid Toronto and Montreal and head right out to NS for my most easterly point and then return to Montreal to pick her up at the airport. Many of the map points are identified for general routing purposes only.

We hope to stay about 50 miles out of NYC and DC and take some sort of commuter train into the cities for the day. Hopefully someone who lives in the areas can give us some guidance on that part.

I have no need to ride in those cities.

Ralph

I notice your route on the last couple of days is reasonably direct from southern kali to home. If, on the way back home, you're not completely sick of riding, may I suggest you come over one of the many passes through the Sierra's that bring you in to the greater Sacramento area. I could easily accommodate you, and from here you could either buzz back over the Sierras on another pass, or you could zoom up I5 and be home in no time. PM me now or on day 50 if this interests you. If you're feeling extremely adventurous I could even introduce you to Old Michael. FWIW most folks opt out on that offer.

P.S. If you haven't already, take Beemerdon up on his offer. It's worth its weight in tequila.

For last minute hotel deals, try the Hotel Tonight app for your smartphone. I have it on my phone for those last minute "need a room" situations and have seen really good rates for the local city I'm in.

Best Western also has a rider rewards program, and they offer buckets and rags to riders for cleaning off the bike. I stay HI express is great but expensive usually but you get a pretty consistent quality (IMO)

Don't forget looking for campgrounds with cabin options. Especially KOA's as their shower and bathroom facilities are pretty good.

I like Best Western and Comfort Inn. Cheap is always good, but a few dollars more for a comfortable bed and clean room is money well spent.

If you stop at the welcome rest area as you enter each state you can usually get a coupon book for lodging and save a lot with the right coupon.

Holiday Inn Express is usually worth the difference in price over Super 8 because the breakfast is good and I can eat there and not need to buy a meal until dinner.
