It may have come up before, but saw this on TWO's Facebook page. Motorcycle checkpoints are now in place along I-75 & I-95, checking licenses, plates, helmets, and for DUI. I really think this is a misdirected campaign...they should be focusing on distracted drivers. Just be aware if slabbing it through GA.

Didn't know we were driving commercial vehicles...

The first checkpoint for 2011 will be conducted from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. March 9 along Interstate 75 at the Southbound Commercial Vehicle Inspection Station in Monroe County. Another checkpoint will be running at the same time at the Southbound Commercial Vehicle Inspection Station along Interstate 95 in Chatham County, just north of Savannah.
This is truly horseshit..... profiling bikes only. ******* Georgia... :angry2:

Absolute ********! I'm hoping some motorcycle friendly lawyer type will take this on pro-bono as this just HAS to be unconstitutional! If it aint', it ought to be!

Look at it as a way to meet new friends in law enforcement. You can never have enough friends in law enforcement. Not sayin it's right but the glass has to be half full or life is to depressing.

As usual, the "news" coverage isn't worth a damn. It says these checkpoints will continue for 21 months, but seems to be saying they'll be very sporadic (The other checkpoints will be held in the spring and fall this year"). How many? How often? And most importantly, why are they doing this at all? Is there a perceived lack of licensure or helmetage among Georgia riders?

The official line is it is "part of a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to collect data over the next two years to improve motorcycle safety, according to the DPS." Hmm, collecting data? They why the DUI checks? I would love to see a successful challenge to this crap.

Well, at least it's only federal money. Wait! That's MY money! Damn, "bastards" is right. :angry2:

fixed.

The New York State Police had motorcycle only check points on I-87 during Americade last year. I have no problem with safety checkpoints if they stop EVERYONE not just motorcycles. I suggest everyone join the AMA to fight this bull s--t ! There is power in numbers. YRMV

Unfortunately the AMA doesn't have the power behind it of the NRA or this would be over quickly. :mda:

We should organize a group ride, getting as many riders as possible at the same time at a checkpoint, just to f@#ck with em :angry2:

Not to get political, but as somebody who worked in the business for a state for 30 years: this is what you get when a state feeds from the Federal Trough.

There is federal money out there to be had, and some dweeb in HQ (who's job is to get it) made use of it. The result is some guys (road officers, aka "taillight chasers") can get in some overtime and take home a few extra dollars for groceries. If a guy can pick up an extra $1000 per year from the feds, maybe it keeps them happy with the state and on the reservation.

We used to have to use a vacation day to pull a shift that was paid for by the feds for a "special enforcement program" such as this, and although it was straight pay, the state got rid of a vacation day on the books, and the officer traded his day off for some money paid for by the feds. Then the guys got wise and said nope. So they let them work overtime at straight pay, coming from the fed coffers. There's "special truck enforcement", "special speed enforcement", "special seat belt enforcement", looking for drug mules, etc. all federally funded.

Bottom line is they probably don't have a hard-on for motorcyclists, and while I'd be willing to bet they won't be throwing any drunks back that they find, they are just making use of a chance to make a few extra bucks. I doubt that any are being forced to do the duty, they volunteered for it. Down side is, I bet somebody's shift is going to be short handed and his ass is out there alone tonight because the rest of the zone just worked the day shift screwing with the bikers.

Don't take it personal.... most of the guys on the details would rather be doing what they signed on for-- at least the older ones. But as they say money talks and ******** walks.
