Hello all,

I'll be touring 2-up through southern Oregon and NoCal at the end of the month, and was wondering what suggestions folks had for camping spots around Crescent City/Redwoods NP.

Thanks!

There are plenty of campgrounds that are biker friendly I found.

Be prepared to pay though. The Redwood people know they have the market and are not afraid to charge more than other areas. They would not allow 3 pup tents on one site due to enviro impact reasons  which was funny for a site big enough for 12 tents. WTF?!?!

Start looking early (around 4pm) as they fill up fast. Then sit back in enjoy your $9.50 bundle of wood campfire. It is worth it even though it cost 3 of us 91.00 (including wood) for camping for one night. If you choose to motel or cabin it you can kiss a lot of your budget goodbye.

I've moto camped at two different state parks in Nor Cal. One was Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park near Carlotta, about 20 miles or so east of Fortuna, and the other was Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Orick, about 22 miles or so south of Kalmath, CA. There were only two of us on bikes and we had one tent so fees were that big a deal. I think they have restrictions on how many people can be on one site though. Fire wood at Grizzly Creek was selling for $7 a bundle and they provided a wheeled wood carrier for your use. Showers cost about $1 for 10 minutes as they are coin operated so make sure you have quarters. Camp fees for most parks is $20 per night but be prepared to pay an additional $5 to park a second bike on one site. I would suggest you access Reserve America's web site and find a state park campground near where you want to be and reserve a site in advance. as with most things, they charge a $7.50 fee to reserve a site and you pay for the ssite when you make the reservation. If you need to cancel, you can but make sure you call at least 24 hrs before check-in or they will still charge you for the night AND another $7.50 cancelation fee.

HTH,

Ray

Another campground is Jedidiah Smith State Park along the Smith river on Hwy 199. It is right at the beginning of the Redwoods on the east side about 20 miles (I think) east of Crescent City. I don't know what their current fees are.

There are many state parks in Oregon along the coast that are first come first serve for tenters also.

You're welcome Griff. Glad I could be of assistance. Have fun on your trip thru the Redwoods. My family and I just got back from a weeklong trip to Grizzly Creek, Klamath, Avenue of the Giants and the Lost Coast. My wife drove the Jeep pulling the camper and I rode the bike two up with my daughters on different parts of the trip. My oldest rode the most, about 600 miles total that week and according to my Zumo, I did 1050. I did happen to find a $230 rock on one day of the trip. It was sticking in my rear tire.

No end of great campgrounds on the coast, Cali or Oregon (Oregon parks showers are free!) Patrick's Point, a few miles north of Eureka, is pretty gorgeous--they used parts of it to film scenes for one of the Star Wars movies (it was the planet Endor) and The Lost World. Never saw a state campground anywhere that wasn't "motorcycle friendly." BTW, the usual limit for Cali state parks is 8 persons per site, no. of tents notwithstanding. Extra vehicles are charged though.

Griff, take it from a local eh' there are tons of campgrounds

to be had, state and national parks, and private campgrounds

all over the place, just ride to your hearts content, then pick

a spot, the only time they are ever close to being full is a

holiday weekend, you should have no problem finding a

clean reasonable spot to camp,

and if you get to Eureka! give a hollar, we'll pound some

Old Style Pilsner! or High Test eh'

Hosers welcomed with open arms!
