Motorcycle tires as nail magnets

I've put 91 thousand miles on my 95 Honda Del Sol. Not a single flat in ALL these 12 years.
I've had my '04 Feej for 18 months. Picked up my 4th damn rear tire nail coming to work today.

What the 'f is it with motorcycle tires? I've had 6 flats on my '02 ZRX1200R, and now 4 in 18 months on the Feej.

The GIGANTIC PISSER? The tires are brand-******'-new. Less than 400 miles on my Avon Storms and the rear's got a big frackin' screw drilled into the dead center of the tire

Nice kit you got a linky to where you puchased that KIt? I got 2weeks out of my new Storm. I pick up a 1 1/2" drywal screw

I aint buy a new tire.. through one of the goooy cord type plug in and road hard all day on it. No problem still hold air..

Ya think you can read down to post #3? Repeat after me, "Avon Road Hazard Warranty". And I will repeat myself for your benefit. Just say "NO" to the mushroom repair kit. and stick with the sticky string repair kit.

I know I'm a new guy around here and it's usually not so bright to contradict the forum admin, but I have had 0 bad experiences with the mushroom-style plugs - string style either for that matter. I have a mushroom-plugged Avon 46ST rear on my current bike (Katana 600) that's got 4k miles post-repair and you can't tell where the plug is without pulling the tire off the rim. I was lazy and didn't get the tire off the rim to patch it internally for 600 miles or so, and in that time (about two week's worth of commuting and one weekend ride) it didn't lose any pressure. A fellow rider at work has had to plug a couple of rears on his Hayabusa (he uses mushroom plugs too) and hasn't had any leaks either.

I prefer the mushroom plugs for ease of use, but the belts in some kinds of tires, like Metzler Tourances, will chew them up pretty bad. Regardless of how you plug the damage, get the tire off the rim and patch it as soon as you can, as has been previously said.

I have and carry both. If I see someone I don't know with a flat I'll let 'em use the mushroom plug. Next time my tires gets a hole I'm using the sticky string.

Why?

There's nothing wrong with the mushroom tire plug. Things go wrong are almost always operator error. I will say that if you habitually go 120 mph or more on an FJR you shouldn't be using any kind of plugged tire.

BTW, the sticky string is holding JUST fine, thank you everyone. I think the key is to get a nice, clean flush cut with the tire so none of the sticky contacts the road, where each revolution of the tire eventually pulls the string out. At least that's what happened the last two times I use the sticky stuff...the plug gradually pulled right out while riding. The latest one, though, has gone 8 days without budging, but this time I carefully undercut the plug string in relation to the surface of the tire. Holding fine, thank you.

NO NO NO how is that.. No i put a stick cord type in...Im goning to call my dealer where i got my tire a see about that warranty..

My luck they will tell me :****: and have a nice day...or yeah we will replace it for another 182.00. I dont remember a road hazzard warranty from dealer, or is this a Avon warranty????

Take a look at the June 2004 Motorcycle Consumer News issue and read about the Stop and Go mushroom plugs. You will find several letters that tell about installing the mushroom plugs, then later find the mushroom part cleaved from the tubular portion. Several people reported that, when they removed the tire to replace or more thoroughly repair it, they found the mushroom loose inside the tire. After reading those letters, I lost all confidence in the mushroom plugs.

Just had 'Punctureseal' fitted in my tyres today, instantly cures nail holes without deflation. The guy said it was an American product which is used by all American post office vehicles and the US military.

Cost £30 for both tyres.

OK yes Avon Storms have a factory warranty against road hazards... I had to buy a new 142.00 rear storm tire. then when it get here they dealer has to file a claim, then i get reimburst or a prorate... Thats whet i found out today from Cal Coast motorsports of Ventura.....
