Every so often I get emails from Nevada's member of the Motorcyclist Advisory Council to the Federal Highway Administration (MAC-FHWA). This is the email I got this morning:

******

This survey is to help road designers and maintenance people about your thoughts about road conditions. Please take the survey and pass it on to other motorcyclists.

The members of the Motorcyclist Advisory Council to the Federal Highway

Administration recently created the 2008 Motorcyclist Road Conditions Survey.

The purpose of the survey is to help state and federal highway administrators better

understand and plan for the needs of motorcycle riders.

All riders are encouraged to take the 10-minute survey before August 1, 2008, by

going online to www.surveymonkey.com/MACMembersHighwaySurvey

I figured some here may be interested in rating the roads you drive often as they related to being on a motorcycle.

On a side note, I hear the sign with a motorcycle on it may become a national approved sign within the next year. Up until now there was not a national sign for motorcycle, each state could create their own motorcycle related signs.

John T,

Thanks for your post. We have a terrible seam sealant (tar snake) problem on one of our major routes into the mountains from the Atlanta area. I sent GDOT personnel a detailed email a week ago and I just forwarded them the Federal Highway Administration brochure and your survey today.

If ALL of us in the MC forum communities were more vocal about roadway concerns, we would likely eliminate some of those "unexplained" or unnecessary motorcycle crashes caused by adverse road condtions.

The Federal Highway Administration brochure is worth a thorough review as a measure of roadway safety for motorcyclists in our respective riding areas.

At this point, I have 3 GDOT personnel and 2 EMT personnel for two counties where we have high MC accident rates on my Outlook address list and plan to keep them informed about adverse conditions in our riding area. We have had too many out of state riders fall due to conditions that local riders know about and "live with" .

If we applied .01% of the words on this forum to direct communication with highway personnel, we would see a huge improvement in roadway conditions. Let's all commit to start speaking up about road conditions that are adverse to the health and safety of motorcyclists thoughout the country.

Check out your state's DOT website. You will be amazed at what you can do to be effective with your communications. Let's get REVVED UP!!

Gasportrider - I agree, I wish more of us would get involved.

Check this out:

Look at the Armorwire flyer

This type of barrier scare me to no end. There is a section of this stuff on my way to work. NDOT tells me it is safer for a motorcycle since we can slide under it. WHAT???? Slide under it and get run over by oncoming traffic? I can't see anyway to slide under it unless I am sliding at a 90 degree angle right at it, and I hope I don't straddle the thin metal post.

This is what could happen during a tumble:

News Report

We should all just get involved.
