Changed the oil in the bike at 2100 miles. Took out the Shell Rotella oil that I saw that several people on the forum were using. I went with a full synthetic oil from Motul. I used their 7100 series 10w-40 oil. Poured it into the case and noticed the oil being red. Kinda weird but oh well. Went for a ride today. Engine vibration is ALOT less. I was surprised at actually how much less to be honest. Shifting the bike is also much smoother than before. I did not put but about 30 miles on the bike after the oil change but with the new PR3's put on yesterday and then the Motul oil change today the bike is much smoother than it has ever been before.

I get the similar results with my shifting every time I change my oil, no matter what oil I use. Something I notice, always, with my FJR. The shifting gets stiffer as the oil gets older. Not that it really matters, or that I care. I change the Shell Rotella every 5k. Makes it super simple to remember WHEN I need to change it, no records req'd.

Money back guarantee the new smoothness is the tires. Not much chance you would feel the engine being smoother due to the oil you are using. Oil has nothing to do with vibration (unless you drink it).

Gunny that. I've taken to adding a half bottle of STP oil treatment with each Rotella 15W40 oil change. Makes a perfect fill with one 4 gallon jug of Rotella and the half pint of STP. The ZDDP zinc additive in the STP help prolong the eventual demise of the smooth shifting. Lets me stretch the changes to 5k miles. YMMV.

ok im risking the dogpile here but one thing that im not seeing when posting about the mobile oil. Is the only mobile oil we should use is the one with a picture of a motorcycle on the front of the bottle or are all of the mobile 1's ok to use?

I would hate to spend 18 bucks a quart if not necessary

DAYUM!!!

If you're spending $75+ on an oil change, I hope this is your assistant...

...cause SOMEONE sure needs to hold the funnel at those prices!!!

i'm spending close to $60.00 with filter.
That's crazy. Buy a 3323 Bosch filter at any auto store for $7.00 +/- and a gallon + a qt. of Rotella full Syn. at walmart for less than $30.00.

next 3 oil changes you only need to buy the gallon at about $23.00 as you only need 8 oz. extra over the gallon you pour in at

each change. I'm sure you could lower the price somewhat if you used different oil.

A few questions Fred:

Why the 15/40 rather than the 5/40 Rotella?

Does adding the STP make that much difference in the shifting?

Would/could the STP lead to a slipping clutch eventually?

2 Qts of Mobile 1 V-Twin 20W-50 Full Synthetic $10.00x2

2 Qts of Mobile 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 $10.00x2

5-6 oz. STP Oil Treatment $6.00

1 Mobile 1 Oil Filter. $12.00

I hope the STP isn't bad for motorcycle clutches. :dribble: I think it has great benefits with the added ZDDP you get with it.

A few questions Fred:

Why the 15/40 rather than the 5/40 Rotella?

The short answer is just that the 15W is cheaper and I believe it is adequate.

I change the oil at 5k intervals. The 15W40 is adequate for those intervals. I am a big fan of the full synthetic Rotella for longer interval applications (cars) and have successfully used it pretty much exclusively (after warranty) on two high mileage SAAB High Output Turbo cars, an '03 Sport Sedan that is still on the road at 155k miles, and a '98 900S that we just retired when it needed a muffler and a starter motor at the same time (more than the value of the car), which went over 200k miles with no engine work at all.

Does adding the STP make that much difference in the shifting?

Yes and no. It feels no different than new oil, but doesn't seem to break down as much toward the end of the oil change interval.

Would/could the STP lead to a slipping clutch eventually?

It certainly doesn't seem to. And I am definitely not the only one to have adopted this practice. In fact it was not my own idea at all. I got it from the Candy Butt President hisself, who racks up way more mileage, and clearly abuses his machines more, than me. Never heard of anyone having clutch problems with STP use.

Look for Advance Auto to have a sale on Mobile One. 32.99 for 5 qt of Mobile One (I use 15-50 in Summer) and a Mobile One M 110 oil filter. You can not beat that price with a hammer. I also use Risolone Zink/ZDDP treatment for the last 7 or 8 oz over the 4 quarts.

At 5000 mile changes it is the best combo I have found and my bike does shift better with it than Yamalube or their Synthetic that I paid out the butt for. I like it as well as Amsoil mostly because you can get it anywhere if you need some, and the sale price is just too good to pass up.

I for one do not buy into the Motorcycle specific oil, and see it as a huge rip off.

Use any car oil that is not energy conserving and change often. Hell I used Castrol GTX 20-50 for many years with no issues.

Oil is hype and salesmanship at it's worst.

I just went to the Autozone website and it doesn't look like that deal is available locally for me. I'm not "real particular" on motor oil other than what I perceive as a quality product. I still have a Purolator filter so I'm heading to the evil empire aka wallyworld for a gallon of Shell @ ~$22/gallon. I also use Risolone for the little bit extra.

I just got back from a 10K+ road trip and did an oil change in the Autozone parking lot in Richland, WA. Bosch 3323, Shell Rotella syn (with a $10 rebate mail in!) and an "oil change special" kit that included pan (which I gave them back full of oil), rags, handcleaner, and a funnel for $5 extra - total was ~$45 before the rebate. I brought a little container of Risolone and a crush washer but no torque wrench.

That was ~6K miles ago so it's time again before CFO & EOM............

I just wanna add I have been using Rotella Syn 5/40 and the STP treatment for 30k. Shifts like buttah. Not a single issue, and the clutch is definitely fine. NO slippage under the hardest of acceleration. This is tested on ummm....a regular basis. :) . Oh and I do 3k-4k ish intervals. Also change out the rear diff at the same time.

Yes I can. :)

Wally World has Mobil 1 15W-50 for $22 per 5 quarts. That's been my elixir of choice lately.

Edit: Corrected 20W-50 to 15W-50.
