"Just this side of Heaven is a place called The Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing, they miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent, the eager body quivers. Suddenly they begin to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, their legs carrying them faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together......."

Ok, so at the risk of being accused of sissiness, here's my latest cut on this.

I grew up on a farm (with both pets and livestock), have hunted all of my life, have put pets down, have watched them get hit by cars, and have waited while some never returned home. I have taken care of them while they were ill, helped some of them get all the way born, buried some that were stillborn, treated mothers that were injured from the birthing process, and have cared for some that just barely made it back home after getting caught in a trap or surviving a fight.

I worked in surgery for 7+ years, and negotiate for a living.

One might think that I might be able to resist these little dudes' ability to get so deep into my life. One would be wrong.

I really want to thank all who have posted with encouraging words, pictures, and thoughts. The support is very much appreciated, somewhat unexpected, and powerfully helpful.

Shane

Hey Shane,

Have a year old cat that my wife calls Lulu (and I call "The Puss"). Talk about getting under your skin. Anyway, she looks like Metzler - called a Mackeral Tabby, I believe. Sorry to hear of your loss and am not too proud to type that I would be lost without The Puss...

John.

To some of us, pets are like smaller, furry children that don't talk. I feel for you. So sorry for your loss.

I've a 9 yr old rottie. My heart beats in her chest.

Shane,

I too am very sorry for your loss.

I had too put down my buddy of 14 years, Grimmy, last month.

He was a lab- akita mutt. A big stupid, smelly pain in the ass. But I loved him like a brother. It's amazing how we get attatched to our pets and just can't believe that someday they will be gone. :(

Tim

P.S., hey bikerrph,

thanks for you post. It was very moving.
