I can't tell you what it is but I am sure you are proud that she has caught it.

We are a family of fishers and I have similar pictures of all my kids (4kids....I think we have more fishing tackle than the local tackle shop), all holding their first fish and then lots more as their catches have grown. Great family fun with a never ending learning curve. Gets them away from the TV and computer and out into the countryside to learn so much more than just fishing.

Looks close. The write up said they have a single long dorsal though (length of back). This one has a small dorsal - maybe due to a young age?

It's a Lizard Fish....throw it back as it isn't good to eat!

These lingcod seem to be a cold water species/west coast species (I say that because most seem to come from Alaska waters--least when googled). Water temps in the gulf of mexico even during winter seldom if ever get anywhere near as cold. I dont know, maybe it was lost or something.

It is however one ugly mf
