One old man on a 2007 FJR.

Left Houston at 02:50, Saturday morning.

South on the beltway to IH10 west.

Sun rise as I was leaving the west side of San Antonio.

Boerne, Comfort, Kerrville, Junction, Sonora, Ozona, Ft. Stockton, Balmorhea, turn around and head back.

Arrived home at 20:30 just as the sun was setting.

1115 miles, 17hrs 40min.

Odometer reading was 47 miles higher than GPS.

Bike ran great. You can really haul butt in west Texas where the posted speed limit is 80mph.

Hot (upper 90s) and dry in the desert.

Corbin seat and Heli bar pull backs did their jobs. No sore body parts.

Hydration using Camalbak 100oz insulated carrier. 50/50 water and Propel Zero. Drank a full 200 ozs (6 liters) and only stopped to pee once.

Thought I would be pretty sore the next day but surprisingly not so much. Hands were a bit tired and sore but that was it. Need to replace my worn out gloves.

I am pretty much ATGATT. I was trying out a new base layer from Cycle Gear called Heat Out. It is similar to the LD Comfort riding stuff but only about 20-30 bucks. Fits like a second skin and helps wick away perspiration and provides cooling. It works. I like it. Durability remains to be proven.

It was a good ride.

Good for you! Now get that paperwork submitted so you can get one of those coveted license plate frames!

Well done! :clapping: :clapping:

Any issues with fuel stops? When I went out that way on my BB1500, the speeds were such that my mileage went way down and my fuel stops were more frequent. There's a pretty limited number of stations once you pass Junction

I was running on reserve between Ft. Stockton and Balmorhea. Don't know what the reserve range is on this bike but I was showing 22 miles when I got to the gas station. I was carring a spare 1.5 liter in the saddlebag... :dribble:

Not sure what kind of mileage you're getting, but my 07 with a PC-III installed gets about 38mpg in normal mixed city/hwy riding. I know I can go 50 miles into reserve on my bike under those conditions. It's easy enough to figure out by seeing how many gallons you put in and subtract from 6.6gal capacity to see how much gas was left. Plan on engine sputtering starting with about 0.5 gallons left. :angry2:

That 0.5 gallon sputter point was the unknown for me. Thanks for the info!

My ONE experience with running it dry wasn't anything close to 0.5 gallons of sputter.....more like 0.5 MILES of sputter. Trying to coast into Trona, CA is not a good feeling. It surprised me how quickly it cut out and how little swishing the bike side-to-side helped.

I'm not sure mine or Harald's are enough data points for a rule, but I'd suggest not running out of fuel is a much preferred option in any case. ;)

A HUGE congrats on completing your first SS1000! Quite the accomplishment. I'll never forget my first SS1000. Boy, did it open up Pandora's Box!

Well done!

Gotta go with Iggy here. I've run out of gas twice - once during the 07 IBR, and once during the 09 IBR.

Both times, when the engine starts sputtering you have got 1-5 miles left to go. As in you are are PHUCKED!

And then 6.6 gallons will go in. So the FJR's 6.6 gallons is all useable. Unlike my old Kawi C10. I found out the hard way that .5 of a gallon of it's 7.5 gallon take was NOT useable. :(

Congrats. I too was surprised at how good I felt the next day. Bottom aside, I could have ridden all day again. Just goes to show you what a great bike we have!

Way to go, Owen! Now it's time to plan the next one!

Did you ever get your brake light farkle ironed out?

I haven't actually run out and also highly suggest not doing that (unless you have a spare fuel container onboard). My approximate 0.5 gallons left in tank (and about 50 miles on the reserve indicator) "sputter episodes" were only quick sputters when the bike was at unlevel attitudes like hills or twisties. Good to know that when the serious sputtering starts you're Phucked.

Congrats on the SS1K.

I've ran mine to 300 miles/tank. With 40 something miles on the reserve. I was high altitude so I was lucky to be going down the mountain and not up!

Today I received my SS1000 Certification. Cool! That was a quick turn around for paperwork. Now I'm planning for my first rally in October... :yahoo:
