So far I'm VERY satisfied with the bike. Windshield is ok for me. I added frame sliders and handlebar weights, and gripp puppies. The bike deffinetly needs handle bar risers. I'm NOT going to spend 300 plus on the Helis and have e mailed D&D and he said he should have em in about a month or two. My only complaint is that when shifting from third to fourth the tranny clicks but doesnt always go into fourth, it just stays in third until I shift again. I find myself looking at the gear indicator now as I shift from third to fourth all the time before I give it the gas. It also does this from second to third but not nearly as much. I know I'm putting enough pressure on the shift leaver....Maybe some kind of adjustment ? Really like the look of it without the bags so I'm gona go with the smuggler from Corbin. The seat is fine for me for now but I still haven't gone any real distance on the bike. I want to wait till its broken in first. The brakes are the best I've ever used and the power is incredible and that's without going over 4000 rpm yet. I can see getting into some real trouble with the law if I'm not careful. One other question I have is after installing the frame sliders (which I did tonight with a good dose of blue loctite) Should I be wary of the bolts working loose after time ?

Thanks guys, this site has been an incredible help, I was even directed as to where to by my FJR and got a great deal !

Welcome aboard! As for the shifting, you can adjust the shift lever location to ensure you get full extension on upshift but really I would get some more miles on her and see how she settles in. And yes, this thing will get you in trouble with the law. :D

+ Shifting will improve with some miles.

+ Heck, you've got a 120miles on it, use it, abuse it (I mean break it in), but quit babying it, change the oil and ride it.

+ Do the 600 mile maintenace yourself, save some dough, do a search here, it basically consists of fluid changes, going over it and checking all fasteners. I wouldn't wait until 600 miles to change the oil though, and doing a Throttle body sync. Also a piece of cake. 45 minutes the first time ever doing it in your life, 30 minutes after that.

Welcome :yahoo:

My thoughts & experience (YMMV, FWIW, two heads not always better than one, etc etc)

The tranny smooothed out for me near the 2500 mile point, and has gotten a little smoother onto 22K now, but the big difference for me was getting to 2500 or so. I had trouble shifting with the boots on, too much boot into too little space, I screwed up shifts from time to time. The shifter mechanism is adjustable for placement & throw, it's really quite a minor adjustment, maybe 5 minutes with a wrench set (it was obvious even to me). Once I did that I didn't have any more boot problems. Other folks have purchased a different model's shift lever (R1, R6, have to search for the info) that shortened the throw (travel) of the shift lever, try that if the adjustment of the stocker doesn't seem to help.

Welcome, good luck with the bike, & if you travel POST PHOTOS for us here!

(edit)

Remember let the engine reach operating temp before doing the redline exercise...

:D :D :D :D congrats on the new scoot. I got 5300 on my 06 and I love her more with every mile. She loves it when I rev her up, never says, I got a headache--not today, trembles with delight when I give her a little "wrist" and always ready to go. Bottom line, ride her, enjoy her, treat her with a lot of respect. She's a spitfire and will throw you is you don't treat her right. Sorry to be so subtle with my opinion but this bike is incredible...

ride smart and watch out for them "cagers"!!!!

they are out there...

Congratulations on the new ride. I had the same type of shifting problem, except mine was between 1st and 2nd. With 3k on it now it's MUCH better, but still occaisionally happens. The 'clunk' still is there from nuetral to 1st, but only when the engines is cold. Doesn't happen at all when it's up to temp.

Enjoy her, but put a few bucks away for speeding tickets!

I recently got a new pair of boots and had a terrible time shifting for a while. The new boots were thicker at the toe and I wasn't letting the shifter back down after a shift so it could ratchet properly for the next shift. I haven't looked at the adjustability. Can you really adjust the throw?

I was hoping everyone would say it would get better with time. As far as the clunking goes, I don't have a problem with that at all, yea it clunks when going into first gear sometimes but I also ride a HD and that clunks going into every gear all the time. LOL I do a little wrenching of my own but is it really necessary to change the oil now? No offense to anyone but I've been on forums for a long time and some people get REAL crazy when it comes to oil. I planned on changing at 600 mi and then every 2000mi . When I get to 2000 mi I also plan on switching over to SYN

I waited until 600 miles with my _new_ bike and the amount of shiny spakles of break in goodness was a amazing. I kinda regret waiting so long, but what the hell? I have a 4 year warranty and I figure I'll wear it out by then anyway or be on to something else.

Oil and a filter is cheap $25.00

But that's up to you ;)

Dont count out that new heli triple clamp. Brings you back a full 1.5 inches......and (as of october 1st) will bring you up an additional 3/4 of an inch. That mod , combined with a corbin (2 inches shorter than stock), puts you in a position you can only currently dream about for long rides.

One thing I noticed is that there doesn't seem to be much flywheel effect with the FJR so the revs drop pretty quickly when you pull in the clutch. This may exagerate the feeling of rough shifting for you, especially in light of the fact that you're used to an HD which has lots of flywheel effect. You may find that shifting the FJR is smoother if you blip the throttle and keep the revs up during gear changes.

Cool info, I shall change my oil this weekend at 345 mi. HELP....... I have been looking for the Moko Frame sliders (or another one that does not require cutting)

WTF do I get them. I am not a google dummy but this one is alluding me.

I gotta 06 AE, I never miss a shift........... OK Funny though, After riding it for a few days went to bikefest two up in Vegas, took Goldwing, I git on, start out down the road, pull the clutch in and waited. Had already forgotten the whole foot thing.... :LMAO. Its all good now (cept it is raining right now and :pft )

Anyway, Where canni git some sliders. HELP!!

The Manual sez not over 4500 RPM (for extended periods) I figured Whuppin that Mercedes AMG 55 the other day on the freeway at 340 miles on the bike at blowin through 135 did not take too long. It was pretty fast (for a cager) He took gettin whupped pretty good though

Thanks

OK, I'm gona stop on the way home and pick up filter and oil, I got nothing else to do anyway. John, your right about the flywheel effect and I've adjusted fine to that and shift very smoothly now. It's just when shifting up to fourth it clicks but stays in third and I gota do it again then it goes. Trust me im putting LOTS of preasure on the shift leaver when I upshift cause I'm so consious of the fact that it might not go. Riding into work this morning it didn't seem to happen quite as much though so maybe it will probably work itself out...We'll see.

I didn't get to mine until 500 miles. Didn't see anything out of the way myself. Oil looked pretty decent to me. I wonder if some of these "alternative" break-in (flog-it) methods contribute to these particulates?

The rear-oil was pretty dark--a lot darker than the Mobil 1 75w90 I put back in, but as others have stated that might be some special mojo they put in at the factory.

I have the same problem.

Yes the shift lever can be adjusted but the manual calls for the lever to fall within a certain range. Look close at your shifter and you will see the range marks on the frame to the left of the peg. The mark on your shift lever should be between those marks. I think it is just what you stated, the lever doesn't fully return to engage the next upshift. I now make an effort to lower my boot between shifts but on ocassion still need to "double click" the lever.
