On this last Sunday, I went on a day-long ride with my dear younger brother Sean.

Seany fell off his dirt bike late last year, landing on his head and shoulder.

His head, being incredibly hard, suffered no damage, but his shoulder crumbled and

required surgery a few weeks later. After weeks in a sling, and months of rehab,

he’s only been able to get back to riding in the last month or so. He owns a number of bikes,

has been riding daily for 30+ years, and rides very fast. He brought his ZRX for this one.

It was great to chase him down the road again.

Oh, and I just passed the 1 year anniversary of my relationship with my FJR.

It’s been 26,000 joyful miles. To celebrate, I had a new pair of Pilot Road 2’s put on Saturday.

Wow! What a difference! Huge improvement over the “old” PR’s.

We met just after sun-up at his place in Grass Valley, and he led me on back roads all over hell,

until I had no idea where I was.

We passed a few familiar spots, and after a couple of hours, we turned onto “the road.”

Just out of La Porte, we turned right at a sign that said - Quincy 33 miles.

I can’t tell you anything else about it. I’m sure many of the local FJR guys must be

familiar with this piece of happiness, but we’re not at liberty to divulge.

(Another comment on this at the end of this little report.)

Now I understand that different folks have different preferences, but this stretch

was for me, just about perfect.

Clean, beautifully smooth asphalt for most of it.

A few first gear tight corners.

Very few really blind corners.

Almost no traffic. (We never came up behind anyone during the whole stretch,

and only encountered a couple of oncoming vehicles.)

And mostly just fantastic, predictable, sweeping curves that were a blast to power through.

Some at 30. Some at 80. Reminded me of my formative years, racing on the Horse Thief Mile. Ha ha.

Probably not “technical” enough for many, but given my skills, it was perfect.

I was able to go really fast, but never scared myself.

Oh, and of course I took some pictures!

New Michelin skins!

Seany. My little brother.

The bikes. Mine's bigger!

A famous bridge. The River Kwai runs under it.

Let's get on with it!

Clowning.

"Hey brother. Take my picture while I come around this corner!"

IMG_1617.jpg

Yes, I know. Too early on the apex.

IMG_1616.jpg

This is fun.

He hates stopping so I can take pictures. Screw his ass. He can wait.

Lunchy in Quincy.

Old farts love this place I reckon.

Ooooh yeah! HAD to include this shot.

And then back the same way. It was like a different road, up and over the mountain.

:D

Thanks for coming along. :D

I'm thinkin' that in the next couple of weeks, I'd like to organize my first ever group ride thing,

and hopefully have some of my forum brothers join Sean and I over this same route, at a semi-spirited pace.

Spirited for me. Perhaps tedium for some of ya'll.

7 am in Auburn? And off to the hills! Any interest? I'll work it out and post accordingly.

Thanks again.

I'm in! Problem is I'm 1775 miles away in Texas. :(

Im officially jealous! We rode that area a few years ago, staying in Quincy and Yosemite, and fell in love with the area. I wish I had known of this road then, but none the less the riding down through Downieville was spectacular!

By the looks of your lean angle in the shots I'd say you ride a spirited enough ride for most folks. :D

Nice pic's, Thanks for sharing. Glad to know your brother is doing fine and how well you like your new PR2's. They are a terrific tire and confidence inspiring.

[Aren't they? I'm just hoping they last. I was getting almost 10K from the old PR's. What does that say about my riding style? Ha ha.
I have about 10,100 miles on my PR2s and it's time for new ones. The last 1,300 miles was the Morro Bay trip on Hwy 1 and the Tioga pass trip, all 2up and overloaded.

I think I like these tires.

Oh sure....now I have to go look at a map and figure out what road that was!!!! <_<

Nice ride and picture report, Michael. It looks like too much fun!

The LaPorte Road is one of my favorites, but I've never ridden it on an FJR. (Used to have to go in pickup or a trail 90 before they paved it.)

Now you've gone and ruined it. Blabbermouth!

Count me in on the ride.

Great report, as expected! Thanks for following the 'rules' and including the food photo. But try something a little more exotic next time.

I would be interested depending on the weekend.... Nice Report...

PS... How did you enjoy the CC concert in Italy? Rich

BTW, yes, I'd be interested in that ride, but will confirm upon details revealed and the rendezvous time to moved to 8:30 AM. And congrats on the 1-yr anniversary. 26K miles! Holy cow, Batman!

Ah yes Quincy La Porte road in my backyard.

This is one of the roads I plan on doing in the next few weeks.

Nice ride report and pictures.

Quincy La Port road over and 49 back or visey versy to Grass Valley would be a fun day.

I think that I've just found part of my route home from my upcoming weekend camping at Bucks Lake.

Oroville-Quincy Highway on the way up, back home via La Porte road through Grass Valley and then Salmon Falls Road to my doorstep.

Now if I can only remember to carry a camera in an accessible place (and stop and take pictures) so I can post my first ride report...

Nice, very nice.

I share your fodness for La Porte Road ...a staple for us over here since they paved it a few years back. Before it was dirt (as mentioned earlier in the thread) and popular with dirt bikes. I was over it (westbound) on Friday on my way to the Cal24 ...my first time this year and always a treat. Trust me, you won't get tired of this road ..and being that it is closed east east of La Port for tyipically about 7mos each winter you have to enjoy it while you can.

I hope you'll let me know next time you head that direction, I'd love to meet up with ya, share some of that fun and perhaps I can help link some other good stuff together. Bucks Lake rd is not bad ....and I really enjoy the tight stuff around Antelope lake as well.

Good pics and thanks for sharing the fun. ...renojohn
