Any neat tricks for not making a mess when removing the oil filter?
Yep! Remove fairing screw right below oil filter. Use the same allen wrench to flex and prop open that little end of plastic. Use a piece of aluminium foil as a trough for oil to keep it out of the foam (behind the plastic). When you put it back make sure you don't crimp the little hose- that's the vent/overflow from the coolant reservoir.
