All, there has been a wee bit of discussion regarding the Tanji fuel cells recently - I had been in contact with Dean even before I brought Wonky home, and we finally had our visit today.

First - and I gotta say this - Everyone I have met through this forum has been an absolute Gentleman. And Dean is certainly no exception.

Dean has a really enviable shop- it's a place I would like to move into to, assuming that my boss lady wouldn't miss me too much. And it's in his garage. I gotta tell ya, Dean just may have someone show up on his doorstep with a Thermarest pad and sleeping bag .....

I showed up, we introduced ourselves, and Dean immediately started checking out Wonky. I think we spent about half of the time I was there just noticing differences.

We pulled Garauld's rack, (Gary, he thought the paint was fine !! ) and the seats, and then he began measuring and drawing in earnest. Steel rules, outside calipers, LOTS of pictures. He and I did a "test fit" with the unit off of his bike (I don't remember the exact mileage - but I seem to recall 64K+ ?)

And so I broached the subject that is near and dear to our hearts - that of the possiblity of making additional cells. And this we discussed at length.

Dean is in a quandry - as mentioned in an earlier post from (I think) SkooterG, the fabricator that Dean used has retired as of 6 months ago. Quotes he has received from other fabricators have been dramatically higher. The materials cost has increased 30% since he bought the aluminum for his original run in 2003. The Tanji tank is a complex design - just look at it - and this drives up the fabrication cost. The historical tanks ran $1,000, and that is just about the point that people will really be on the fence about investing in one. I think it's more psycological than real - let's face it, if you're into LD riding, what's another grand? I would think (assume) that the increase in materials cost along with the fab costs could easily result in a $400 or $500 increase in price - IF the volume was there to hold that down. A run of 5 units could easily result in $2,000.00 each. ouch.

Dean is researching other fabricators, and is trying to find someone that can keep the cost down - In addition, the small lots that he has had manufactured in the past don't lend themselves to volume efficiencies. Keep in mind that Dean is footing the tab out of his own pocket, and making little, if any margin on these. He describes himself as 'a guy that likes to ride bikes' - so his fuel cell has become a wee bit of a monster. I think he built these to help out some of his fellow Iron Butt riders.

Back to the fuel cell for the 06 - he said the only difference will be the mounting 'tangs' on the bottom of the cell - so he's going to figure that out, and see what it will take to modify his exisiting design. I offered to take Wonky back any time he needs another gander - he live's about 8 miles from Wonky's stable.

EDIT: PARAGRAPH DELETED.

I think Dean's garage should be a bonus stop in the 07 IBR. What do you guys think?

Folks, time will tell. If Dean can find a fab guy to do this - (any ideas out there? ) and keep the cost reasonable, we may see some more cells. Perhaps we could convince Dean to move forward with a group buy on these ? Not for a discount - but simply to get them made.

Personally - if my abilities to ride long distances prove themselves, AND if I start riding rallies, I will certainly purchase a Tanji cell. Dean can charge me what he needs.

Note to Dean: Thanks for the Snapple. Thanks for the converstation. And Wonky misses you. (she was murmuring something about 'calipers' and I thought I heard 'Ohhhh Dean, measure me again!!!)

Keep your fingers crossed, gang !! More to come !! ( I hope)

I went down there to pick up my cell and he wouldn't let me say no to him helping me install the bulkhead (It turned out my hands are too big, I was cutting them up reaching in and out of the tank so his help was really a godsend). Dean is a class act and his garage is nice.

Thanks K....

I believe Skyway was going to check on some fabricators to see if they could be of assistance. I'm like you... very interested in a cell like Dean has designed for my '05... he's the man with the plan.

DEAN !!!!!! I'M SORRY, DUDE !!!! BUT WARCHILD SAW MY POST !! -- OH MY GOD!!! this wasn't supposed to happen !!! (whimper)

Dean, you might want to wear your asbestos underwear - it's comin your way !!

(but, but,, but Dean, it's not my fault !!!!)

(crap. I better get my phone number changed.) :dribble:

I got one of the first three made just after WFO3. I am no IBA rider but Dean sold me one anyway. I had trouble scheduling picking it up at his place, so, he made his way up near Modesto to visit his Parents place and them installed the tank. I already had the bulkhead fitting installed. What a nice gesture. Saved me from shipping or traveling 12 hours roundtrip. I believe he finish 22nd in a previous Iron Butt on a Harley. I think a top ten in the one with his 03.

Yeh, and if scooter would get off the nest for 5 minutes he might save you the trouble. :D

yeah. I know. I think I screwed the pooch on that, eh?
Blued, screwed, and tattooed dude... the only fuel cells you're gonna see from Dean are the "D" batteries he's gonna be throwing at your head.... :assassin:

Freekin' Warchild beat me to it -

Dean is going to suffer for this. It was hard reading the adorational love note until you got to the "fondling my bike" part.

THAT I can believe.

When you see him again - tell him his moustache is cheesy and to get ride of that hat.

Also tell him.....

aw **** - I'll tell him myself. though I must say - I've never been in his dream bike garage !

Dale ------ clip that **** and post it on ldrider and ibdone - can't wait to see the fallout !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :yahoo:

Ohhh Jeeeeeszz!!!

Why do I feel like the kid who knows he’s going to get pants by the high school bullies and can’t do anything about it!

Alas . . . rumors of my elevation to LD Godliness’ has been GROSSLY exaggerated!!!

I am but a mortal LD aficionado, attempting to hob nob with the Warchild’s and Hickey’s of the LD world. As a matter of fact, I so enamored of their persona, I often use the alias “Chuck Hickey” when sojourning the many establishments in Nevada.

In my opinion there are no LD Gods. There are only LD dogs!

Every IBR winner is a big dog.

Then there is a group of highly respected medium dogs

And finally there's the little dogs yapping in the pack (that's where I might fit in)

Hal (KaitsDad) is OK. He’s a proud new owner eager to learn about FJR’s and cool things to make the ride better. He just go carried away with his interpretation.

This whole thing is analogous to “The Wizard of Oz”.

Hal thought he was lookin’ at a garage, but it’s the place where my wife banishes me for bad behavior. I'm in the garage alot.

Hal thought he was lookin’ at a rally-ready, farkled FJR but what he was lookin’ at was an old ’03 FJR held together with gaffe tape, bailing wire and zip ties.

Hal thought he was lookin’ at IBR “rally flags”, in reality they were IBR “crying towels”.

Hal may have thought he was watchin’ an LD God but what he didn’t see was the ol’ guy behind the curtain pulling levers, pushing switches, kicking handles and yelling into a megaphone.

If this is what Hal thought after I gave him an ice tea . . . glad I didn’t give him a beer! :)

Ohhhh boy! I gotta go find some suspenders and clean underwear. :(

Heck, Dean, if you'd given me a beer, I'd still be there !! :D

Sorry about this - I know it will take time to heal (and to get your shorts clean!) :ninja:

I'm probably NEVER gonna live this down. So - when do you want to fondle Wonky again? :p

I work with a great local industrial fabricator. He has a CNC plasma cutting table and multiple wire feed welding stations, press brakes, rolls, and about 60 employees on 2 shifts. They do work in steel, stainless, aluminum and most any other metal. Right now they are fabricating about 2000 of those upright riding seeder machines. Anyway, I would like to get drawings so I can get quotes. I believe $1500+ is very high. Everything could go out as a kit, we just need someone to weld up the boxes.

From a liability standpoint, I believe he could just sell sets of plans ($50?) with all the warnings and sources noted.

Riiiiiggghhtt -

what you didn't mention or I had to read between the lines - is that you, Ray Blair and Ben Askew have ALL used my name in NV. Which is why I'm on the christmas card list of every whore house in the state !!!!! You guys really have to find someone else to impersonate.

by the way - Deano --- everyone knows you are an alright guy - especially since you came to your senses and got off that Harley. Now if you would just lose the HD hat, key fobs and all the oil stains on the garage floor - you'll be all better.

Glad to see you on the board. At least here I can call you a FNG.

See you in dunnigan??? if not sooner. I'll be visiting SuperBrace on the 27th to get the '06 measured up for their production run. how far are you from Huntington Beach???

Not like I wanted to drudge this thread up again... ok, that's a lie... I really wanted to drudge this thread up again

Any developments in the welder/skyway/tanji Devils triangle, or has this entire discussion gone dormant?

No progress as of yet. Dean was not at the Cal24, well I did not see him there at least. I will send him an email and see what happens.
