I don't own an FJR . . . YET . . . but I'm willing to gamble that I will want the shelf when I get it. So I will purchase a Gen II shelf as part of this group buy.
I have a gen II shelf sitting on my shelf. I personally like the bike better without it. So I don't use it.So Cap'n Bob, why is it you prefer your FJR without the shelf? Is it just a question of aesthetics or is it something functional? Since the FJR doesn't have the nice dash cowling of the C-10 I was figuring I was going to need a shelf to get my GPS up where I can easily see it while riding when I finally get an FJR.
Btw, I posted a M & G for Alex next weekend in Suffern on "our" calendar. He felt after all the Newburgh M & Gs being canceled due to weather he would try one farther South.
So are you ready to sell it to me then??I have a gen II shelf sitting on my shelf. I personally like the bike better without it. Well Mike it's more a combination of mostly aesthetics, but also my finding I really do not need it. Although it seems pretty well designed, I think it kind of takes away from the great looking FJR instrument panel area (for me). So although it gives much better visibility of the mounted farkles, I really do not need it to get by. But I will admit that things like GPS are in a much better position.
I just decided that I prefer the cleaner look and still functional position of my non-dash mounting over the better function and less aesthetically pleasing look using the shelf. The dash also requires extra work when performing certain maintenance. Although not excessively so, it does require the hassle of removal for some things. Again, not so much a problem. But more just my preferences.
I've got one of these on my Gen II, and while I do enjoy it and can't image being with out now that I'm all farkled up, I have had one issue with it from day one that continues to be a problem. Vibration.
I've tried one GPS, now I have two and a radar detector on it and honestly it's better now than it was with one GPS, but the vibration is still pretty bad. It transfers road and wind input into a vibration that is bad enough that I can't read either GPS units at times. In fact, this past week-end a combination of this problem and a couple of "normal" bumps in the road caused the locks on my GPS mounts to release and the units came completely off the mounts! Twice!
Now, truth be told I have not drilled the nose piece and installed the rubber grommet/bushing thing, instead using the supplied industrial strength velco. When talking to the folks at N-Line they told me that this should help, but explained that it wasn't the dash moving, but the entire nose piece moving. I guess it's possible, or at least possible that is part of the problem, but I don't believe it is all of it.
Not trying to discourage anyone from buying, just wanting to share some info with other riders.
Did that, and you're right, it helped, but apparently it takes both that and the well nut. Tell you what also helped, and this is strange sounding, when I went to the V-Stream and removed the Yamaha touring screen. I'm guessing the air flow over the edges of the dash slowed it down some...What made it perfect was running zip ties through the front piece (that says fjr on it), and putting those through the plastic vents (not sure if these are gen2 specific), and tightning the shelf down to them.
