If this poor old California boy was to go this far from home I would like some ideas on a way there with out getting stuck in the big cities.

Going to events I usually take a more direct route and leave the sightseeing for the trip home.

Many thanks,

Longrider

There are so many ways to go! Where in Cali are you coming from?

I am in the center of the state out side of Fresno. I do not mind using the Interstate, but I do not like big city traffic.

On your inbound leg, blast up to Chief Joseph Highway and the other great highways around there...or do the Rockies, blast east on the state roads..avoiding the massive oil fracking operations in the Dakotas...drop into LaCrosse and enjoy meeting all your FJR buddies from across the land

On your scenic leg, Mississippi river south, bypass west of St Louis to Farmington, MO. Head south and west to north central and northwest AR (see Hooterville ride in midwest section for hints). Blast west to Rockies, and tour whatever you want there...head to southern Utah...head south and west from there to your home destination.

I might have to make this one...maybe.
You have to go. It will be great to have my wingman to ride those roads with me! I had a blast up there. The Rally Ralleye was great too. Well worth the trip. The Days Inn is very accomodating. They have plenty of room. Great spot for NAFO.

With the Great Lakes cock blocking me every which way, my ride out looks quite boring. Might have to trek through Canada to UP, then cross by Makinac Isl. and down the top side of WI. Could be interesting, got all winter and many beers to think about it ;)

I'll tag along....

Another great contribution from the master threadjacker.

Marty, Don't encourage him! (even though you are right) Wheetie is wrong, though. I would have to be Curly, because I have the belly for it. (Even though Scott has the head for it!) Joe would definitely be Larry.

With a few more beers, you could think of this...Take your friggin' watercraft to Milwaukee. park water craft. Rent Milwaukee Iron...and show up in LaCrosse, brapping the throttle the whole time. Make lots of friends, ask for help, because yer Sportster has chrome that needs polishing. Eat Sausage....cuz it's Wisconsin. Drink beer...cuz its Visconsin...and return to your native New Yawk, via Milwaukee and the Great Lakes.

Done.

Why does everyone want to avoid Chicago.........................What? No kamakazi pilots out there!

Bypassing Chicago isn't so bad. It's getting past Gary and Hammond that sucks big time. There has to be more accidents on that Indiana stretch of Interstate than any other section of superslab in the country.

Either a late morning crossing aimed at arriving at the Indiana/Illinois state line about 10-11am or early afternoon 1-2pm. If it's Friday, all bets are off. If it's raining, all bets are off.

To avoid whole mess, I-74 to I-39 North, and cut off onto local roads north and west of I-88 and I-39.

This is certainly an event that I'll be looking forward to. It'll be like CFO on steroids. Super sized! I'll definately be taking days off from work to enjoy the entire event. That is if you folks let Joy bring me along again.
