Almost every other major motorized speed racing will run in the rain: Formula 1, Indy, Cart, motorcycle, etc. I've heard every lame excuse from die-hard nascar fans why nascar stops running during the rain: the tracks are too slick, goodyear doesn't have rain tires that will fit, it's too dangerous, they can't fit wipers on the windshields, etc etc.

If superbikes ON TWO WHEELS can run in the rain then so can Nascar... bunch of weenies. I will never call golf a sport and I will never attribute full racing status to Nascar until I see them run in the rain.

Yeah!! what's with that anyways???

NASCAR is just a bunch of rednecks turning left. Toss in a right turn and they loose it!

:p

I could give a **** less personally, can't stand NASCAR anyway! One time at a friends house [his TV - his choice] watching them race at Sears Point [admittedly, I do find it more tolerable if they're on a road course] one of them draavers commented, "this is hooaaard, it aiiiin't laaak reeeaal raicin", my immediate mental response was, " No bubba, this IS - REAL RACING!!"

Comes down to driver safety, and $$$$$...... I think. Goodyear makes a different tire for each track, depending on length, and surface condition. The teams would have to spend more to have hundreds of rain tires on hand just in case. Most teams, with the exception of about 3, are already struggling to keep their cars in the field, and competitive due to hesitant sponsers, and the collapsing auto industry.

Fans don't want to sit in the rain and watch a race either. I'd rather come back the next day, and watch a decent race, rather than one with slow cars due to tougher racing conditions.

It would be intersting to see them try it a few times though, to see if they could make a decent race out of it.

P.S. Silent, not all NASCAR fans are rednecks. Only about 1/2. Your from CA, home of the fruits, nuts, and flakes.....which one are you?

NASCAR on a road course..................kinda like watching elephants dance

I agree with you TCMike. I enjoy watching NASCAR races and don't care if folks think I am a redneck for doing so.

Well heck, it's pretty obvious what I think of people racing pushrod engines with intake restrictors in circles.

My best memory of NASCAR is a Speed Channel "minute update" where they mentioned that Loris Capirossi would be racing a 500GP machine with a broken collarbone and 2 broken hands. They then went on to mention that a NASCAR driver had bumped his shin on a table in his living room and would be out of the next race.

I kid you not.

That about sums up NASCAR drivers for me. Oh, and they cheat, and are proud of it. And half of them can't even make it around the circle without crashing.

(I have always wondered if that particular ordering of stories was an intentional subtle slam by Speed or just happenstance.)

Reading comprehension is fundamental :p

I said that NASCAR is a bunch of rednecks turning left. That would infer that the drivers are rednecks, not the fans. The fans would be turning there necks to the right as the rednecks go by <_<

Ohh and I'm just a flaky nut :p

I like watching racing in the rain because I like seeing the skill as the racers make ultra-powerful bikes tiptoe around the corner. You see which ones have the skill, and which ones just normally rely on brute power.

Usually the backmarker guys experienced at fighting their crappy bikes end up passing the guys who are used to a perfectly set up bike and perfect conditions and can't handle big problems.

NASCAR guys can't make it around in the dry. The wet would just be one long caution until there was nobody left to finish the race.

I hate seeing crashing, so I hate NASCAR. To me, crashing is a sign of either an incompetent driver or substandard equipment, or people that can't race clean.

Hah...one of my most favorite subjects. And here's proof...

I have almost worn this baby out. I take it to all the serious racing events I frequent: American Le Mans Series; MotoGP; and yes, even Formula 1. It never fails to please the fans.

And I am A Serious Racing Fan!!

Cheers,

When (what's his name?) starts SCREAMING "BOGETY BOGETY LET"S GO RACIN BOYS" My dog starts barking and go'n in circles. Left ones of course!

Wee Willy, Where did you find that shirt, ...it's Great!! I want one!

TCMike, "...and watch a decent race, rather than one with slow cars due to tougher racing conditions." WTF, seems about half of each race is run "Under Caution" [REALLY slow cars] anyway, and a fair number of'em even end up being won under caution, ..now that's REALLY exciting! Ever watch Rossi in the rain? Ain't nuttin' slow about that boy wet or dry, and he ain't surrounded by a cage! Always did like a race better than a parade, ...kinda like the difference between a Harley rally & an FJR rally. huh?

Devil's advocate here, There have formula one drivers that could not cut it on a nascar track. That being said, I can't think of anything that lasts 3 plus hours that I could sit and watch. oh, and todays race was shortened by rain.

I have to admit to kinda liking NASCAR back in the days of Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, David Peterson (sp?) etc... when the cars were actually different, and stock car sorta meant something. Since the cars are now all purpose built to a template, it doesn't hold the same appeal. Oh, and I like the idea of changing gears, braking and turning right... so road course racing to me is WAY more enjoyable to watch.

Can't imagine how many crashes there would be if they ran in the wet... it would no doubt wind up looking like one of those demolition derby or figure-eight racing thingies at the local fair...

Indycar (and CART, when CART existed) don't run ovals in the rain. NASCAR did run Watkins Glen in the rain last year. They fitted wipers and everything!

Ovals are a different sort of racing, as everybody has already pointed out, but not so much because they're boring (which they are) but because they're crowded. And fast. Fields don't get strung out single file with several lengths between cars on ovals, they run in large crowded groups. All the Rain-X and wipers in the world isn't gonna do any good in that situation.

So let them have their dry tracks and sunburned fans, and keep ignoring them. Why the fuss?

As for golf being a sport (and thus golfers being athletes,) have you had a look at Tiger Woods's shoulders lately? Not somebody I'd pick a fight with.

I've tried to watch other racing, and have found it boring. I find that most people that knock NASCAR, haven't really watched it enough to understand the who 's , and what's of it. I used to think it was boring too, until about 10 years ago. Gave it more of a chance, went to a few races, and now I'm a fan. Yes you do have to put up with the redneck factor that is still there, but fading.
